Freshman Wilson scores 26 points at League Swim
Freshman Alara Wilson followed in the footsteps of fellow Crusaders Jensen Lynnes, Ralph Cornejo, and Rome Hunt this season by joining the cooperative agreement with Winfield High School to compete in high school swimming this spring season. The cooperative allows Wellington swim athletes to compete as a Winfield Viking during the regular season, participating in both individual and relay events until league when the Wellington athletes compete under their own banner as Crusaders. Wilson battled a shoulder injury all season, but throughout her run she garnered state consideration times in both the 100 Free and 50 Free.
On May 10, Alara traveled to the Hutchinson-hosted AVCTL Division III/IV League Meet to become a TEAM OF ONE, competing in the 100 Free and 50 Free as a Wellington Crusader and trading her hot pink Viking cap for Crusader red. She placed 6th and swam personal bests and state consideration times in both her events! She swam a 27.94 in the 50 Free, which was short of the state-qualifying cutoff by 0.57 seconds. In her 100 Free, she swam a 100.68, heartbreakingly only 0.02 seconds away from qualifying for state. Her performance at league was good for 26 team points, which placed TEAM ALARA/WELLINGTON 7th out of 8 teams competing at the league meet.
Though her season ended at league after the following week confirmed that her state consideration times missed the cutoff, Alara made great strides and accomplished a lot while persevering through her shoulder injury. Wilson consistently was the top freshman swimmer for the Vikings and also contributed to the Winfield team as a leg on a 200 Yard Free and 200 Yard Medley relay teams and occasionally swam the 100 Breast Stroke, for which she swam a personal best this season of 1:22.61, narrowly missing state consideration time there, as well.
Winfield High School had a phenomenal season, taking 1st in six of eight regular season meets, becoming back-to-back AVCTL Div. III/IV League Champions, and finishing 8th overall and as the top 4A school at the KSHSAA 5A-1A State Championship.
We're all excited to see what the future will bring for Alara's Crusader swimming career and will continue to cheer on the Winfield Vikings!
