Regional 4A Champs

TEAM RESULTS

1st - WELLINGTON 17
2nd - Circle 13
3rd - Wichita Trinity 9
4th - Winfield 7
4th - Chapman 7
6th - Augusta 4
7th - El Dorado 1

Highlights of the meet

  • First time since 2010 that Wellington has been regional champion.  We’ve had Collegiate in our regional every year since 2011 to 2020.  We have several runner-up finishes during those years.

  • Top performers Jensen Lynnes & Lyric Cornejo finished 2nd overall.  They had a first round bye because they received the #2 seed.  Opening match they beat Lichlyter/Sullivan from Augusta 6-0,6-0.  In the semifinals they beat Glaves/Soto from Circle 6-2,6-0.  In the finals they lost to Dunne/Majors from Wichita Trinity 4-6,2-6.

  • Kami Reichenberger received the #3 seed after a great performance at league on last Monday.  She beat Maddie Davis from Wichita Trinity 6-1,6-0.  They she beat Madeline Lancelot from Trinity 6-3,6-2.  This was a very good match for Reichenberger because Lancelot knocked her out of regionals last season.  In the semifinals Reichenberger lost to an exchange student from Circle, Alejandra Gaiton, 1-6,0-6, who she’s played a total of 3 times this season.  In her final match she played Mekenna Roark from Winfield and it was an exhausting match with Reichenberger losing the first set 4-6, but then bounced back and beat Roark in a 2nd set tiebreak.  Roark then defaulted the final set to give Reichenberger the 3rd place finish.

  • Ashlyn Gerten & Kadynce Aufdengarten also had a solid performance after they received the #4 seed.  The pair beat Luna/Chabot from El Dorado 6-2,6-2.  Then they played the #5 seeded team from Winfield, Richert/Norton and won an exciting 3 set match 6-2,4-6,10-4.  The pair then lost to the #1 seeded Dunne/Majors from Trinity 2-6,0-6.  In their final match the Wellington pair were up and down.  Wellington got down early losing the first set to Glaves/Soto from Circle 3-6.  Then Wellington took control of the match winning 6-0,6-1 the final two sets.  This placed the Wellington pair 3rd overall.

  • Crystal Ramirez was the #7 seed and won a great opening round match over Barkus from El Dorado.  Ramirez lost the first set 6-7(3-7).  Ramirez was down 1-5 in the second set and won 6 straight games to win 7-5.  In the finals set Ramirez won 10-6.  Crystal showed so much heart in that match.  Ramirez then played Madeline Lancelot from Trinity.  Ramirez barely lost the first set 5-7, and then just ran out of energy losing 0-6, which ended her season just missing out on the state meet.

  • Wellington qualifies 5 of their girls and 3 entries for state.  In 2017 Wellington took 5 players to state.

  • This is Jensen Lynnes 2nd time qualifying for state in 3 years, everyone else Reichenberger, Cornejo, Gerten, and Aufdengarten 1st time qualifying.

  • 18th straight year that Wellington has qualified for the state tennis tournament.

  • State Meet is at Winfield next Friday and Saturday.

  • Reichenberger heads into state with a 14-11 singles record (18-12 overall)

  • Lynnes/Cornejo head into state with a 21-6 together. (Lynnes is 26-9, Cornejo is 23-7)

  • Gerten/Aufdengarten head into state with a 24-7 record together (Both are 25-9 overall)

AWESOME PERFORMANCES LADY CRUSADERS! CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to Coaches Brian Aufdengarten and Daphne Adams (LEGENDS!)

We mixed some things up today, Coach Aufdengarten reports that

"Lyric Cornejo was top finisher at #2 singles.  Got the #5 seed since she hasn't played singles since 8th grade.  Finished 3rd overall.

Jensen Lynnes & Kadynce Aufdengarten played #1 doubles and got the #4 seed since they were 0-0.  They finished 4th and lost a 3 set match to Buhler.

Ashlyn Gerten & Crystal Ramirez played #2 doubles and got the #4 seed also since they are 0-0.  They also finished 4th and lost in 3 sets also to Buhler.

#1 Singles player Kami Reichenberger had a tremendous day even though she got the #7 seed.  She lost her opening match to an exchange student from Circle.  She avenged a earlier loss this year against Roark from Winfield, so she has the most recent win over that player.  She took 5th place beating Richardson from Augusta 9-2.

Really proud of the group today and how they played.  We were hoping for top 6 as a team and almost finished 3rd, with mixing the lineup up.  We had a very fun day."

2021 Girls Tennis Team

Wellington traveled to Wichita Collegiate yesterday and played in an 8 team tournament. Wellington had a pretty nice day on the courts, which placed their team 2nd overall, 1 point behind the champion Wichita Collegiate.

Wellington was led by the #2 doubles team of Ashlyn Gerten & Kadynce Aufdengarten who received the #1 seed. They had some close first matches winning 8-5 over Kapaun to start, then beating a fiesty Augusta team 8-5. In the championship match they saved their best tennis for the day and beat Collegiate 8-3 good for 1st place. The pair are now 16-3 on the season.

The #1 doubles team continued to have some dominating performances. They also were the #1 seed in a good doubles field. They beat Augusta 8-3 to start, then they beat a very good Salina Central team 8-2. In the championship they squared off against Collegiate and played very well but fell behind 1-7. Jensen Lynnes & Lyric Cornejo then rallied off 4 straight games to close the gap to 5-7, then Collegiate won the next game to win 8-5. The Wellington pair finished 2nd overall.

Playing at #2 singles was Crystal Ramirez who had a solid performance also. She lost her opening match to Kapaun 4-8, but them bounced back to win two in a row beating Collegiate 8-1, and Winfield 8-3. That is a very good win against Winfield, since they are in our league and regionals. Ramirez placed 5th overall.

Kami Reichenberger played #1 singles and ran into some stiff competition. She played a solid player from Newton and lost 5-8 in the first round. She bounced back and won 8-0 over an Augusta player. In her final match she ran into another good player from Winfield and lost 1-8, to take 6th place.

"The JV girls tennis team was in action on Monday hosting their first tennis match at home this season.  Wellington entered two teams in the meet and there were several medal winning performances for both teams.  The Wellington Red team was led by Blanche Provot, an exchange student from France.  She went 4-0 on the day at #2 singles good for 1st place.  Also placing 1st for Wellington was the #1 doubles team of Riley Anderson & Heidi Gulick.  The pair went 3-1 on the day, but it was good enough for the gold medal.  Addie Hinshaw saw her first JV action of the year, after playing a couple of varsity meets and she also went 3-1 which placed her 2nd overall at #1 singles.  The #2 doubles team of Alyra Koerner & Abby Mraz also finished 3-1 for the Wellington Red team which gave them second place as well.

The Wellington White team was led by their two doubles teams who both finished 3rd overall.  At #1 doubles was the team of Kyra Cornejo & Kendall Janzen, who finished 2-2 on the day, and at #2 doubles was Thalia Garcia & Avery Yonash who finished 2-2 also.  Stellar Young played at #1 singles and went 1-3, and River Douglas played #2 singles and also went 1-3.

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS @ Andover HS 091621

2021 Girls Tennis Team

Wellington traveled to Andover on Thursday for the Andover Grand Slam Tournament.  There were 16 schools that took part in the tournament.  Wellington finished 14th in the tournament that was a bigger class tournament with 12 5A & 6A teams.  Even though the Crusaders didn't place high there were some solid performances.

Playing doubles was Jensen Lynnes & Kami Reichenberger and the pair went 4-1 on the day placing them 17th.  The pair dropped their first match to Independence after a very good battle.  The Wellington pair jumped up 2-0, but then fell behind but kept it close at 5-6.  Independence then won the last 2 games winning 8-5.  After that the Wellington pair didn't lose another match, beating Goddard 8-6, Kapaun 8-3, Newton 8-3, and  Winfield 8-4.  These two rebounded well after their 2nd match, they got through it, but struggled.  Jensen placed higher this year than last in this tough tournament.

Ashlyn Gerten & Kadynce Aufdengarten had the second most wins going 3-2 the day.  The pair lost to a good Andover Central team to start 5-8.  In their next match against Maize South they jumped out to a 2-0 lead then fell behind 2-5, then they made a run and tied it at 6-6.  The next two games Maize South won beating the Wellington pair 8-6.  That's when Wellington started to come alive beating Ark City 8-0, then two Goddard teams 8-4, and 8-4 to finish their day in 25th.  Not the place we were looking for but the wins we were looking for.  Ashlyn is adjusting to playing doubles after playing singles all year last season and Kadynce is a freshman that will get better with experience.

Playing singles was Jordyn Brown who finished 24th going 1-4.  She started out with the #5 seed from St. James Academy and lost 1-8.  Her next match she beat a girl from Campus 8-1, then lost to Roark from Winfield 8-0.  Her next two matches were very close matches losing to Bishop Carroll 5-8, and Newton 6-8.  Those last two were heartbreakers, I think she was mentally drained on the last match.

Wellington's other singles player was Crystal Ramirez who went 2-3 on the day good for 27th.  She lost her opening match to Combs from Goddard 2-8.  Then she ran into another decent play from Salina South, and lost that also 2-8.  Her next match she beat Campus 8-4, then lost to St. James Academy 4-8.  In her final match she beat another Campus player 8-5.

VARSITY GIRLS @ GODDARD - CUT SHORT BY STORMS 091421

Doubles Teams 2021

Submitted by Head Coach Brian Aufdengarten

We didn't get it all completed with storms moving in but had a decent day.  No team scores were figured since all rounds weren't complete.  The doubles led the way with each of them staying undefeated in their first two meets.

#1 Doubles Jensen Lynnes & Lyric Cornejo went 3-0 on the day beating Goddard 7-1, Circle 7-0, and Collegiate 7-5.  They were up 5-0 over Maize in their last match but didn't get to finish the match.  These two played very well today, I was very impressed.  The Maize team was undefeated also and we were dominating them.  The pair are now 8-0 on the season.

#2 Doubles Ashlyn Gerten & Kadynce Aufdengarten also went 3-0 on the day beating Goddard 7-0, Circle 7-1, and Collegiate 7-3.  They were also in their last match with undefeated Maize in a tight match when the storms hit.  These two did well but are capable of playing better, we have to finish points up at the net.  This pair is now 7-0 on the season.

#1 Singles Kami Reichenberger finished 1-2 on the day in her first match of the year.  Reichenberger fell to Goddard 5-7, then lost to a very talented exchange student from Circle 0-7.  In her final match she beat Collegiate 7-0.  We wish we had that Goddard match back, it was Kami's first match of the year with two even players.  She will be alright going forward.

#2 Singles was Addie Hinshaw.  She only got through 2 matches losing to Goddard, and then to another exchange student from Circle.  In her third match she was tied with Collegiate when the storms rolled in.  I thought Addie played so much better today, than in her first meet, she is making some strides in a very short time.

The JV team traveled to Winfield on Thursday and had some good performances.  Wellington took some extra players along.  #1 Singles Crystal Ramirez went 4-0 on the day good for first place.  #1 Doubles of Kyra Cornejo & Heidi Gulick went 3-1 and finished 2nd overall.  #2 Singles Stellar Young went 2-1 good for second place.  #2 Doubles Sawyer Parkey & Kendall Janzen went 2-1 good for 3rd place, while Wellington's other #2 doubles team of Alyra Koerner and Abby Mraz finished 4th overall.

The path to the STATE 4A GIRLS TENNIS MEDAL - Congrats to Rylee Rusk and Calli Hatfield for their 6th (out of 16) place finish at the State 4A Tournament!

Provided by Head WHS Tennis Coach Brian Aufdengarten...

State Tennis was a little different this year with only the top 4 from each regional qualifying.

Doubles started on Friday morning, followed by singles in the afternoon around 2:00.  Wellington's doubles team entered the state tournament after placing 4th at regionals, having to play a team that finished 1st in their regional.  Most 4th place teams wouldn't be able to beat a #1 seed, but Wellington's two seniors of Rylee Rusk and Calli Hatfield used much of their state experience to prove the odds wrong.

We were to play Independence Gregory/Dodson, but due to a quarantine that we learned about Thursday night, Independence substituted Marquez in for Dodson who was on quarantine herself during regionals.  Typically a better player doesn't get substituted in but Marquez is a 4 year state participant.

The first set of the match Wellington held a 6-5 lead and had 3 set points but couldn't finish them so it went to a tiebreak and Indy won 7-2.  In the second set Wellington jumped ahead 3-1, but Indy stormed back and it went to another tiebreak, this time Wellington winning 7-4.  Then came the third set super tiebreak that had Wellington trailing 7-9, before tying it at 9-9.  The final score was 12-10 with Wellington coming out on top.  That was a really good team that we beat.  Half that team was the overall #1 seed at state last year.

After the 3 hour first match Wellington was playing a familiar league opponent in Buhler who Rusk and Hatfield beat at league.  Wellington had a lead in the first set but only to see it go away and go to a first set tiebreak, but coming up short 7-2.  After that the Wellington pair looked gassed after going to 4 straight tiebreaks, and lost the second set 6-1.  We were on the court for 5 hours in 2 matches, I was a little worried because we had to play one more to qualify for day 2.

The Wellington pair played Wichita Trinity who finished 3rd in the Pratt regional.  Wellington fell behind 1-3, then rallied off 7 straight games to take a 8-3 lead.  Trinity won another game but Wellington finished off the match 9-4, to guarantee Saturday play.

On Saturday the pair opened up with an emotional Hesston team and it was back and forth for the match until around 6-6, then Wellington won 9-6 to put them back against the very good Independence team for 5th/6th place.

Wellington trailed for much of the match against Indy but would get close and never gave up, but Indy came out on top this time 9-6.  We are very even with that team, on the season we played 4 times and the series was 2-2.  Rusk and Hatfield finished the year together 23-9.  Hatfield reached 26 wins this year, and Rusk 25 wins.  Rylee Rusk set the all time win mark with 118 wins beating Kylie Aufdengarten who had 117.  Hatfield was a three time state qualifier and two time state medalist finishing 6th this year, and 9th in 2018, and she finished with 85 career wins.  Rusk finished in 5th in 2017, 2nd in 2018, 1st in 2019, and 6th this year.  These two girls will be missed from our program and put their names in some of the top players in Wellington's history.  Listed below are 3 and 4 year state qualfiers for Wellington

RUSK & HATFIELD - 3 seeds, finish 1st in #1 Doubles!!

Wellington traveled to Buhler for the varsity league tennis tournament and had some really good outcomes.  Wellington placed 4th overall as a team behind McPherson, Collegiate, and Buhler.

Playing at #1 singles was Ashlyn Gerten who was the #6 seed in a very deep singles field.  Gerten dropped her first match to Huerta from McPherson who was the #2 seed and finished 2nd overall.  In her next match she beat Pennycuff from Augusta, then lost to Camp from Winfield 5-9 to finish 6th.  Ashlyn continues to battle; she got some games on Camp who is a 3 year state qualifier.

Playing #2 singles was Olivia Brand who was seeded 5th overall.  Brand lost to the #4 seed from McPherson Kuhn.  In her next match she had the overall #1 seed who got upset in the opening round and dropped the match to the 3 time state qualifier Chase from Circle.  Brand beat Sullivan from Augusta 9-7 to finish 7th overall.

One of the biggest highlights of the day or season if you want to say was the #1 doubles team of Rylee Rusk & Calli Hatfield.  The pair were seeded #3 overall and won their opening match over Winfield 6-1,6-2.  The pair then played a very good Buhler team that Rusk has lost to twice this season when she was paired with a different player.  Wellington dropped the first set 7-5, but then came back to win 6-3 in the second set.  Then it went to a thrilling third set super tiebreak.  Wellington trailed much of the time by a game but tied it at 7-7, then Rusk and Hatfield won the next 3 points to win 10-7, which sent them to the championship match.  In the championship, Wellington met up with the #1 seed McPherson team.  McPherson had half the state championship team in 5A paired with another state qualifier much like the Wellington team.  McPherson came out on fire making shot after shot winning the first set 6-2.  Rusk and Hatfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead and then held on to win the second set 6-4.  Then came another crazy super tiebreak.  It was back and forth with Wellington trailing by as much as 3 points.  McPherson was up 12-11, then double faulted twice and the Wellington pair took a 13-12 lead then won the last point to win 14-12 in the super tiebreak.  This is Wellington's first #1 doubles league championship since the new league formed in 2010.

The #2 doubles team of Jensen Lynnes & Lyric Cornejo received the #4 seed which paired them against Circle to start and the pair won 6-2,6-2.  In their next match they played the undefeated Buhler team and lost 2-6,2-6.  In their final match they played a very good Collegiate team and battled hard winning the first set 6-4.  Collegiate came back and took the 2nd set 6-4, then it went to a super tiebreak for the third set.  Wellington jumped up 5-3, but Collegiate won 7 straight points to win the match 10-5.  Lynnes and Cornejo finished in 4th place.

Quick facts league tournament since we started league with Wichita Collegiate in 2010 and 8 teams.

2016 #2 Doubles Avery Rusk & Lauryn Snipes

2017 #2 Singles Rylee Rusk

2018 #1 Singles Kylie Aufdengarten

Hatfield's first league medal and a good one!!!

Very proud of these girls today, we will get ready for regionals in Pratt on Saturday.

Airalyn Frame

Wellington finished 4th overall missing 3rd by 1 point.  McPherson was first, followed by Buhler, then Circle.

Wellington had one league champion at #1 singles by Airalyn Frame.  Frame was seeded 4th overall and won her first match 9-1 over Mosier from Circle.  Her next match she beat the overall #1 seed Lee from Collegiate 9-7.  In the finals Frame was behind 2-6 against  Witte from McPherson and rallied back to win in a tiebreak.

Wellington’s #1 Doubles team of Olivia Brand & Crystal Ramirez received the #4 seed and won their first match over Winfield 9-4.  They then met the #1 seed from McPherson who had a 2 time state qualifier on the team and almost pulled off the upset losing 7-9.  In their final match they lost to Circle after running out of gas 3-9 to finish 4th overall.

Playing #2 singles was Jordyn Brown who received the #6 seed.  Brown was tied with Gillespie from Circle 3-3, but Gillespie took control winning 9-3.  Gillespie went on to win the championship on the day.  Brown bounced back and beat Childers from Augusta 9-3, then beat Payton from El Dorado 9-4 to finish 5th.

At #2 doubles was Riley Anderson & Kendall Janzen who received the #7 seed.   The Wellington pair lost to Buhler in their first match but then beat the 6th seeded El Dorado team 9-3, then beat the 5th seeded Collegiate team 9-5 to finish 5th.

All the girls played good with all getting some wins.  Airalyn was a league champion and did great for never playing tennis before.

WHS GIRLS TENNIS 2020

Report from Coach Aufty:

"Wellington traveled to Andover on Thursday and competed in a 17 team meet.  Andover has a brand new complex that is huge and they took over this meet that used to be played at Ark City.  It was nice because teams were able to social distance in the complex because it is so big.  Masks had to be worn by all spectators and players in the complex.  In the tournament there were four 4A schools, one 321A school, and the rest 5A and 6A.  Wellington finished 9th overall in the standings which I was very pleased with.

Wellington's top performance came from the doubles team of Rylee Rusk & Calli Hatfield.  The pair beat Campus 8-0, then beat a good Andover Central team 8-4, which was kind of a revenge match for Rusk after losing to them the week before in a tiebreak with a different partner.  Rusk and Hatfield lost their next match to an undefeated Andover team that went on to the championship match 3-8.  They rebounded and beat Ark City who was the #2 seed in a tiebreak, and then lost their last match to Independence 6-8.

The next highest finish was singles player Ashlyn Gerten who finished 10th overall.  I can't say enough about Ashlyn's great heart and she battles so hard.  She won her opening match over a Goddard player 8-5, then lost to the 4th place finisher from Bishop Carroll 1-8.  She bounced back and beat a Newton player in a marathon tiebreak, then beat an Independence player 8-4.  In her final match Gerten was down 2-6 and rallied back against an Andover Central state qualifier but lost it in a tiebreak.

The doubles team of Jensen Lynnes & Lyric Cornejo ran into a tough first round matchup with Lenexa St. James and lost 3-8.  The pair bounced back and beat Goddard 8-3, then lost to a Wichita Collegiate team that had last years state runnerup in doubles on the team 0-8.  In their next match they beat a good Andover team 8-4, then lost to an Andover team 4-8 to finish 22nd.  I was pleased with the pair of girls, would of like to have that last match it was a lot closer that the score looked.

Kami Reichenberger had herself a very good day also going 3-2 overall, barely losing her first two matches.  She lost to Newton 6-8, then to an Independence girl in a tiebreak.  She then beat two Ark City girls and a Salina South player to finish 25th overall.  Very pleased with the team today."

Coach and Team 091420

Wellington tied Sterling for the team title with 32 points, winning their 2nd straight varsity tournament.

Coach Brian Aufdengarten reports:

Top finisher was Kami Reichenberger at #2 singles who went 4-0 on the day.  She beat Winfield 7-0, Chaparral 7-0, Sterling 7-0, and Kingman 7-0.  That's a pretty decent day she didn't even give up 1 game, not heard of much even some of the best players in the state don't do that often.  Kami is settling down and playing well she is 11-1 in our last 3 tournaments.

#1 Singles Ashlyn Gerten is starting to figure things out also and went 3-1 good for second place.  She beat Winfield 7-0, Chaparral 7-0, Sterling 7-3, and eventually lost to last years 321A's 4th place finisher 3-7.  Ashlyn's match with the Pearce girl was really good many deuce games, she played well.

#1 Doubles today was Rylee Rusk and Calli Hatfield and they went 3-1 also.  They beat Winfield 7-1, Chaparral 7-1, and Kingman 7-0.  They lost their only match to Sterling who is very good and now 11-0 on the season.  We lost in a tiebreak after being down 2-5.  i loved our comeback to get it to the tiebreak, best tennis I've seen us play this year.  That team has the 3rd place finisher mixed with an 8th place finisher, they are pretty good.

At #2 doubles Wellington had two entries and both of them medalled.  Olivia Brand and Crystal Ramirez finished 2nd overall going 3-1, and Airalyn Frame with Jordyn Brown went 2-2 good for 3rd place.  Both teams beat Winfield and Chaparral, and both lost to Sterling.  In the end the two teams had to play each other with Brand and Ramirez winning a close match 7-5 over their teammates.  Both teams battled hard, I think I even heard Frame and Brown let their teammates know they scored more games on Sterling, in a friendly ending to the Wellington vs. Wellington match.

Wellington was at Pratt this weekend in a 10 team invitational and finished 1st overall as a team.

Report from Coach Aufdengarten

WHS GIRLS TENNIS 2020

"#1 Singles Ashlyn Gerten lost her opening match over a state qualifier from last year from Larned 6-8.  She won her second match 8-0 over Chaparral.  Then she ran into Kingman who finished 4th at 321A state last year and lost 2-8 but played very well losing several deuce games.  She then went on to beat a state qualifier from Greeley County 8-4, and another state qualifier from Kiowa County 8-2.  Gerten finished 4th overall which I was very pleased with.

#2 Singles Kami Reichenberger was Wellington's top medalist going 5-0 on the day and winning the championship.  She started in pool play beating Lyons 8-3, and Greeley County 8-1.  She then played Pratt in a cross bracket match and won 8-0.  In the championship pool she beat Lyons again 8-1, then beat a state qualifier from Larned 8-4.  This is Reichenberger's second straight tournament to medal in.

#1 Doubles was Jensen Lynnes & Lyric Cornejo with Welliington mixing it's lineup up a bit from the first two meets.  Lynnes and Cornejo beat Lyons 8-2 and Greeley County 8-0 to start off.  In cross bracket play the pair beat  Ashland 8-0.  In the championship pool they ran into a Sterling team that had a 3rd place and 8th place finisher at state last season and fell behind 0-5 to start and ended up losing 3-8.  The Wellington pair beat Larned 8-1 in the final match to finish 4-1 on the day for 2nd place.

#2 Doubles was Olivia Brand & Crystal Ramirez who had a very good day also going 4-1.  They opened up pool play beating Larned 8-4 and Chaparral 8-2.  In cross bracket play they beat Pratt 8-1.  Much like the #1 doubles team Brand and Ramirez met a tough Sterling team who both went to state last season and lost 2-8.  They beat Ashland 8-6 to secure 2nd place on the day."

State Tourney Bound!

Submitted by Head Coach Brian Aufdengarten

"The Wellington girls tennis team was in action on Saturday at Wichita Collegiate for regionals on a cold morning.  Singles players Olivia Brand and Natalie Henning both got seeded in the top 10, with Brand being the nine seed,  and Henning being the 10 seed. Brand was playing Cozine from Wichita Trinity, and jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but Cozine came back and tied the match at five all. Cozine then won the first set 7-5.  Brand then lost the second set 6-0 which ended her season.   Henning was matched up against Jackson from Pratt and lost a very close match which could've went either way. Henning won the first set 6-3, then lost the second set 5-7.  The two players went to a super tiebreak for the third set which is played to 10 points. Henning had a 9 to 7 lead when Jackson won four straight points to win the match. That was a heartbreaking match which ended Natalie's senior season I appreciate how much she has done for our team over the past four years.

On the double side Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk received the number one seed and Wellington's other team of Calli Hatfield and Jensen Lynnes received the four seed.

Aufdengarten and Rusk opened up with Edson/Lindberg of Circle and won 6-0,6-0.  At the same time Hatfield and Lynnes we're playing García/Sharp of Pratt and won by the same score 6-0,6-0.  In the quarterfinal round Aufdengarten and Rusk continued their dominance beating Winfield's Woodburn/Law winning 6-0,6-0 again.  Hatfield and Lynnes then had to play the number five seed from Wichita Trinity Klaasen/Dunne and found themselves down 1-4 to open the first set.  Wellingtons pair then settle down a bit and came from behind to win the first set 6-4.   In the second set the Wellington pair had another close set but came out on top 7-5.  The win then guaranteed the Wellington pair a trip to the state meet and guaranteed top four finish.

Up next  was the semifinal match  where those two Wellington teams had to play each other. Aufdengarten and Rusk won the match 6-0,6-2.  This put Hatfield and Lynnes in the third and fourth place match against Wichita Collegiate Gentile/Yoakum.  The pair kept the first set close for a little while being down 4-3, but the Collegiate team  rallied and never gave up another game winning 6-3,6-0.  Very very proud of these two anytime you can get a freshman to the state meet with Jensen and Calli returning to the state meet is an awesome feeling.  Meanwhile Aufdengarten and Rusk had their hands full in the championship match with another Wichita Collegiate  team of Lair/Conrad.  The Wellington pair won a close  first set 6-4. After that the Collegiate girls  came to life and jumped up on the Wellington pair 5-0 in the second set. Aufdengarten and Rusk won 2 games but lost that set 2-6.  The final set was hotly contested and was tied at 4-4, with Wellington having some break opportunities but didn't get them and Collegiate  went up 5 to 4. In the final game Wellington got broke and lost the match 4-6.   This is Aufdengarten's fourth straight year at the state tournament and Rusk's  third straight year at the state tournament. Hatfield and Lynnes  enter the state tournament with a record of 16-8 together, Aufdengarten and Rusk enter with a record of 28-2:"

League Tennis @ McPherson HS

Kylie Aufdengarten, Rylee Rusk, Natalie Henning, Olivia Brand, Calli Hatfield, and Jensen Lynnes saw lots of court action Monday at McPherson HS - it was AVCTL LEAGUE MEET time, this weekend 4A REGIONAL ACTION in Wichita, and then the following weekend, STATE ACTION in Winfield on Oct. 18 & 19.

It was an awesome day for tennis, great temps, little to no wind....PERFECTO! Other teams at the league meet competition Monday in McPherson were, Augusta, Buhler, Circle, El Dorado, Collegiate, and Winfield. Here is a recap of the day, provided by Head Coach Brian Aufdengarten:

"The Wellington tennis team competed in the league tournament at McPherson on Monday and finished fifth in the team standings. The top performance was by the number one doubles team of Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk who finished third on the day.  The number one doubles bracket was loaded with top teams in the state. Wellington received the number one seed and got upset giving them their first loss on the season in the semi finals by a Collegiate team.  The pair then bounced back and beat Buhler for third place. That loss was hard to take, we won the first set 6 to 1 then lost the second set 5 to 7. We never got going in the super tiebreak, I’m glad the pair bounced back in their last match. Kylie & Rylee improved to 25-1 on the season!

Playing number two doubles was Calli Hatfield and Olivia Brand who had never played together before and received the fourth seed and finished in fourth place. They almost pulled off an upset over Buhler, losing in a super tiebreak, then they lost in another super tiebreak in the third and fourth place match to McPherson. The pair did well today for never having played together and had a lot of fun out on the court.

Playing at number two singles was Freshman Jensen Lynnes who was the number six seed and nearly pulled off a big upset over McPherson who was seeded third.   Jensen took the match to a third set super tiebreak and lead 8 to 5 but the McPherson girl rallied back and won five straight points to win 10 to 8. The McPherson girl is a three-time state qualifier who is a senior. Jensen bounced back and beat a decent El Dorado player 8 to 1, and then got some revenge on a Winfield player that beat her earlier in the season. Jensen won 9-2 which was good for 5th.

Playing at number one singles was Natalie Henning in a really tough singles bracket. She received the seventh seed and finished in seventh place. Henning lost to Wichita Collegiate, the number two seed and to Buhler before defeating an Augusta player.  Regionals will be played this Saturday at Wichita Collegiate."

Varsity Girls Tennis 2019

Wellington tennis Traveled to Wichita for the tournament of champions where 16 teams completed.  It was an open draw tournament so there were 32 singles players and 32 doubles teams.

Wellington had some mixed results but they did not get to finish the tournament because of the rain that moved in so tournament will be finished on Wednesday with some of the Kansas City schools not being able to come back.

Wellington’s doubles team of Aufdengarten and Rusk remain unbeaten on the season improving their record to 21-0, by winning their first two matches over Hesston 8-0, and Kapaun 8-1.   When the rains came in they were in a very close match with Saint Theresas from Missouri who was definitely the best team the pair has seen this season. Aufdengarten and Rusk will go back on Wednesday and play in the championship of the tournament.

Wellington’s other doubles team of Hatfield and Lynnes dropped their first two matches to Andover and  Lee Summit North another Missouri team in a close match 8 to 5. The pair then beat a decent Goddard Eisenhower team 8 to 5, and a Parsons team 8 to 0. Hatfield and Lynnes will have one match remaining.  The pair improve their record to 12-5 together on the season.

Olivia Brand lost her first two matches to a Lee Summit North player 3 to 8 and two a independence player 3 to 8. Then she bounced back and beat a Wichita Independent player 8 to 6, who she lost to last week at the Ark City tournament.  Brand has two matches left in the tournament and will play another Independence player.

Natalie Henning dropped her opening match to an Andover player 1 to 8 then lost to a Maize player4-8, and a Lee Summit North player 2-8. When the rain came in she was leading Parsons 3-0, so she will finish that match and have one more after that.

Henning avenged a loss to Ross from Winfield who beat her at Ark City last week, winning 8-4 over the Winfield opponent.  Henning finished 3rd overall.

*One doubles Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk received the one seed but knew it would be very tough having to go through two of Collegiates top teams.  They beat Goddard 8-1, then Murphy/Yoakum from Collegiate 8-2.  In the finals they beat Lair/Gentile who finished 5th at state last season 8-3.  We played pretty well it was fun to watch.  The pair is now 19-0 on the season.

*Two doubles was Calli Hatfield and Jensen Lynnes who continue to improve in every meet.  The pair got seeded second and beat Newton 8-2.  Then just like the one doubles, had to go through two solid Collegiate teams beating Schmaltz/Do 8-1, then beat Glass/Bhargava from Collegiate in the championship 8-3.  The pair now moves their record to 10-3 on the season.  Wellington plays at Collegiate on Saturday in a 16 team tournament.

Varsity Girls Tennis 2019

The girls tennis team traveled to Ark City for a huge invitational with 16 teams there, where only 4 were 4A, 1- 3A, and 11 -5&6A schools.  It was an open draw tournament meaning there were no #1 or #2 players.  That being said there were 32 singles players and 32 doubles teams.  Wellington was hoping to be in the top 10 for team scoring and actually finished 8th, only 5 points from 6th, and 7 points from 5th.

Wellington's top team at the meet was Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk, who received the #1 seed in the tournament.  The pair opened up with a win over Andover 8-2, then won their second match 8-0 over Salina South.  The third match matched them up with Collegiate and Wellington pulled out the close match 8-6.  In their fourth match they jumped up on St. James Academy 6-0, but the St. James team made a charge and got it to 6-4, then the Wellington pair won 2 in a row to win 8-4.  This put them in the championship match with host school Ark City, with a big crowd for the home team.  Wellington went back and forth and beat the Ark City team 8-6 to claim the championship, Wellington's top finish since they got into the tournament in 2014.   Wellington's top finish ever in the Ark City tournament, was in 2017 when Mekenna Adams and Kylie Aufdengarten finished 5th overall.  Aufdengarten also eclipsed the 100 win mark of her career during the day.   Aufdengarten and Rusk move their record on the season to 16-0.

Wellington's singles player Natalie Henning was the next highest finisher placing 16th and in the top half of the field.  Henning was down in her first match 2-7 and mounted a comeback to get to a tiebreak against a Salina South player, and won 7-4 in the tiebreak.  Henning then ran into some very good singles players losing to Kapaun 0-8,  Andover 1-8, Andover Central 4-8, and Winfield 4-8.  We didn't really care about loses because her first win was very good and there are some good singles players in the field.  Also playing singles for Wellington was Olivia Brand who finished 22nd overall.  She lost her opening match to a very good Collegiate freshman 0-8.  Then she knocked of a good St. James Academy player 8-6.  Then she faced her 3rd straight private school player in Wichita Independent and lost 3-8.  She bounced back with another win beating Campus 8-2, then dropped a match to Maize South 2-6.  I was very pleased with Olivia also she competed hard all day long.

Playing in the other doubles spot was Calli Hatfield and Jensen Lynnes.  The pair dropped their first match to state qualifiers from Andover Central 3-8.  Then then lost a close match to Kapaun 5-8.  Then the pair settled in to win 3 straight matches over Goddard 8-3, over Winfield 8-7(13-11), where they were losing 2-7 in the match also and came from behind.  Then in their final match they beat Andover 8-3.  Great finish for these two, in only their second match together.

Exciting day to say the least it was hard to believe that we had someone get in the top 4 let alone win the tournament.  Very proud of all the girls.

Varsity Girls Tennis 2019

The Wellington Varsity Girls Tennis Team, participated in two meets the last two days. On Friday the Lady Crusaders traveled to Towanda for a make-up meet.  Wellington mixed up the team for the third straight meet and had really good results.

Number one singles player Natalie Henning was the number six seed and lost a decent match 4-8 to a state qualifier from El Dorado. Henning then bounced back and beat a Wichita Classical player 8-0, then defeated the number four seeded player from Augusta 8-1, which was good for fifth place. Olivia Brand played number two singles and was seeded third.  She won her opening match 8-0 over an Augusta player, and then lost a very close match to Circle, a state qualifier last year, 6-8.  She finished off her last match winning 8-5 over an El Dorado player, two finished third overall. The number one doubles team of Kylie Aufdengarten and Rusk Rusk received the number one seed and owned up to that seed.  They beat Circle 8-1, El Dorado 8-3, and Buhler in the finals 8-3.  The pair of them stay unbeaten at 11-0 on the season, winning their first three meets of the year.  Playing at number two doubles was Crystal Ramirez and Jordyn Brown.  The two freshman ended up being the number seven seed and pulled off the biggest upset of the day, beating the two seed from Circle 8-2 in the opening round. The pair then lost to Andover Central 2-8, and lost a close match to El Dorado 6-8 to finish fourth.  The Lady Crusaders placed second as a team behind Buhler who is ranked second in the state and finished ahead of El Dorado, who finished third.

Ashlyn Gerten and Kami Reichenberger 3-1  2nd place at #2 doubles

Jensen Lynnes 2-2  3rd place at #1 singles

Jordyn Brown also played in her first varsity competition and did very well at singles with two very close matches losing 5-7 in both.  Very proud of this young lady stepping in and playing for us.

Jensen got off the courts about 9:45 in the evening 2 tiebreak matches and another 7-5 match.  She was very tired.

#2 doubles did very well and are very scrappy, very quick, and going to be fun to watch over these next four years.

Natalie bounced back after a first round loss and won 3 in a row which tied her for first and she came out on top.

Kylie and Rylee gave up 2 games all day.  Sterling was the toughest team and we won 7-1.  It is a state qualifying team."

Ky & Ry 4-0

Very hot day today but some very good teams here.  Buhler is ranked 2nd in 4A, Conway Springs 3rd in 321A, Sacred Heart 4th in 321A, and Wellington 4th in 4A.  We finished 3rd as a team where I expected.

Couple of new freshman filled in Jensen Lynnes at #2 singles and went 2-2 good for 3rd.  Eventually she ran out of steam, a little bit longer matches that in middle school and she had some really long points.

Natalie Henning battled hard in one of the toughest spots at #1 singles and had to play a 3rd place finisher at state Perrin, then a 5th place finisher at state with Frederick, and another state qualifier in May.  She played hard throughout.

#1 doubles Aufdengarten and Rusk fell behind their last match 3-0, then 4-1, and mounted a rally taking an 6-4 lead eventually beating Conway Springs 7-5.  That team finished 3rd at state in 321A last season.  #2 doubles Brand and Reichenberger went 1-3 in their first varsity action beating Sacred Heart and playing the eventual champion from Buhler to 7-5.

@ AVCTL LEAGUE TOURNEY Winfield
Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Congratulations to WHS Junior Kylie Aufdengarten- Kylie finished FIRST in #1 Singles (first to do so since 2009!) at the AVCTL Girls Tennis Tournament held in Winfield on Monday in a very exciting fashion!!

WAY TO REPRESENT KYLIE!!

CLASS 4A REGIONALS will be in Winfield this Friday! Originally scheduled for WELLINGTON on Saturday, moved to Winfield due to weather / football.

League Champion

The Lady Crusaders were 2nd as a team for the second straight year at the AVCTL League Tournament!  "All the girls stepped it up Monday and helped with the team", Coach Aufdengarten reports.

" #2 Doubles Natalie Henning and Olivia Brand got the 5 seed and upset Winfield in a third set super tiebreak 16-14.  The pair then lost their next two and finished 4th overall.  Very proud of these two, they have played singles most of the year and to finish in the top 4 in our league is awesome.

#1 Doubles Jacelyn Buck and Calli Hatfield got the 5 seed and finished exactly in that position in the end.  They lost to the 4 seeded Winfield team 6-4,6-2.  We kept it close early on and just got outplayed at the net, they were more aggressive, but they are a good team.  Buck and Hatfield then easily beat Augusta 9-0, and El Dorado 9-2.

#2 Singles Rylee Rusk got the #2 seed and won her first match 6-0, 6-0 over El Dorado, then beat a good Circle player 6-2,6-3.  That put her back in the championship at #2 singles for the second straight year.  This time she ran into a good sophomore player from Collegiate and dropped the match to finish 2nd.

At #1 singles Kylie Aufdengarten got the #2 seed and beat her first opponent from El Dorado 6-0,6-1.  In her next match she beat a very good Circle player 6-2,6-1 in a match where both players were winded early on.  The first 4 games took about 45 minutes to an hour.  She moved on to the finals and met Geoffroy from Collegiate the defending 4A doubles champion from last year.  Aufdengarten jumped up 5-1 on the first set but Geoffroy came back to 5-4, then Aufdengarten won the first set 6-4.  The second set had Geoffroy jumping up 4-0, then Aufdengarten won 2 in a row and almost 3.  Geoffroy won the second set 6-2.  In the third set super tiebreak Aufdengarten jumped up 5-1.  Geoffroy eventually caught up to within 1 at 6-5.  Aufdengarten won 10-7 in the super tiebreak."

This is our first league champion at #1 singles or #1 doubles that we've ever had since Collegiate joined the league in 2009.  After 10 years of close matches in some we finally got it.  Very proud of all the girls today and a very happy dad.  If we left our lineup the same as we had most of the year, we probably take 6th as a team, but everyone stepped up today.  Regionals in Wellington this Saturday."

Coach Aufdengarten had this to say about the day overall:

Natalie Henning went 2-3 on the day and finished 20th overall.  Natalie keeps getting better, she had a very nice win over Page from Andover Central 8-0.

Olivia Brand went 1-4 on the day, had to play the champion from Kapaun in the opening round.  She finished 28th overall and had a couple of other close matches.

Kylie Aufdengarten & Rylee Rusk went 3-2 on the the day also and finished 7th overall.  Lost quarterfinal match to Kapaun 6-8, who had one member of their state champion doubles team last year.  The two played very well at teams and then kind of lackadaisical at times.

Jacelyn Buck & Calli Hatfield went 3-2 also on the day and finished 19th overall.  We lost a tiebreak match in our opening round which could have went the other way.  They bounced back and won two in a row, then lost to St. James Academy, and then beat Winfield 8-2 in their final match.

Happy with 9th place, only other 4A teams that finished above us by less than 5 points were Independence and Winfield.  Kylie and Rylee were the top 4A doubles placing team.

Team finish wasn't too bad only 2 points out of 3rd overall.

Best finish on the day Jacelyn Buck & Calli Hatfield at #2 doubles.  Got the #1 seed and won over Augusta 8-2, over Andover Central 8-2, and beat Collegiate in the finals 8-7(7-5) in tiebreak to take first overall.  The pair are now 6-0 on the season together.

#1 Doubles Kylie Aufdengarten & Rylee Rusk got the #2 seed.  They won their first match over Circle 8-0.  Then they played Andover Central the #3 seed and lost 8-5.  We led 5-4 and lost 4 straight games.  They then bounced back to beat Buhler 8-1, to finish 3rd overall.  The pair are 5-1 on the season.

#2 Singles Oliva Brand got the #5 seed and beat the #4 seed from Augusta in the opening round 8-3.  She lost the #1 seed from Buhler 2-8, and Collegiate 2-8 to finish 4th overall.

#1 Singles Natalie Henning had a tough round at singles with some really good players.  She lost to Circle to start, then lost to Wichita Classical 3-8.  In her final match she played awesome and beat Augusta 8-1.

Both singles players continue to get better and made progress from our first meet, with very little practice with all the rain we have had.  Kylie and Rylee lost one we didn't think we should have lost, but that happens we just didn't play with as much energy as Andover Central.  Jacelyn and Calli continued to play well, their last match was a little closer than we liked but they held in there against some difficult players.  Wellington will make up their varsity meet on Monday.

WHS Girls Tennis 2018 - Coach Aufdengarten

The WHS Varsity Girls Tennis Team finished 2nd in Tuesday's (08.28.18) season opener here at HOME. Head Coach Brian Aufdengarten had this to say about the first varsity event of 2018...

"Very pleased to finish 2nd overall, really thought coming in we might be able to take 3rd, so very pleased on the finish.  Singles player Natalie Henning had a great match against Frederick from Buhler who won #1 singles playing her to 8-4.  She battled hard all day and was pleased with her.  Olivia Brand had some very good points in matches, her last match she was tied 4-4 with Bender from Conway Springs and just ran out of energy.  Wish she would have played her earlier in the day.  Both singles players never gave up and will get better, singles is tough and there was very good competition today.  Probably the most impressive players were Jacelyn Buck and Calli Hatfield going 3-0 at #2 doubles and only giving up 1 game of the day.  These two looked very good, Calli was making some great shots, and Jacelyn is so intimidating at the net.  Their net play by both was key.  Kylie Aufdengarten and Rylee Rusk also went 3-0 on the day and played well, but struggled at the net.  We weren't finishing points up there, we have to get better.  There was some good competition at #1 doubles, but I think we can get a lot better."

Action continues for the Lady Crusaders (@ HOME again)on Tuesday, Sep. 4th at 3:00PM. Wellington will host Chaparral, Kingman, Sterling, Wichita Collegiate and Winfield. Here are pics from Tuesday's opener! Congrats on the fine finish!

2017 SEASON

COACH AUFDENGARTEN'S STATE TOURNAMENT WRAP-UP!

State Tennis @ Pratt (4A)

State 4A Girls Tennis @ Pratt

Had a big day the first day, and even bigger day on day 2. Finished 1 point out of second and third, that stung a little, but some of that was out of our control, we did the things we had to do by getting wins on day 2.

Abby Lowe 2nd year being a state qualifier, won her first match 6-1,6-1 over Wyse from Hays, then she lost to the state runner-up Schabel from Independence in a great match that Abby played so well losing 6-3,6-4.  She then won two more over Becker from Marysville 9-1, then in a crazy match when it was getting dark she played Scharenberg from Circle.  Abby was up 8-6 when the girls couldn't see because there were no lights on the court.  They moved courts about about a 15 minute wait.  Scharenberg tied the match at 8-8 and they were in a tiebreak and Lowe was down 2-4, then a breaker went out and the lights went off again, they had to wait another 15 minutes to move to the only two courts with lights.  Lowe lost the first point going down 2-5, then rallied 5 straight points to win 7-5 in the tiebreak.  That guaranteed her a medal at state.  Day 2 Lowe lost to Ruffin from Collegiate 1-9, then lost to Allen from McPherson 2-9.  In her final match she played Trout from Independence and won 9-4, to place 11th.  Lowe finished her career with 81 wins.

The Rusk sisters had a tremendous state tournament after placing 4th in regionals last week.  The pair opened up with Bishop Miege and won 6-1,6-4,then they ran into Edmonson/Bruce from McPherson who finished 4th overall and lost 3-6,3-6.  This put the sisters on the backside and they faced Parsons and won 9-5.  In their next match they met a familiar opponent who they played at regionals also Withrow/Lair from Collegiate.  The Rusk sister jumped on them early and played one of their best matches at state and won 9-0.  That guaranteed them a medal at state also.  On day 2 they opened up with Maddex/Sagehorn from Andover Central who they lost to at regionals.  Maddex was the state runner-up in doubles last year.  The Rusks won a hard fought battle in a tiebreak winning 9-8(7-2).  They then played Holthaus and Williams the regional winner from Marysville in the Topeka Hayden regional.  The Rusk sister jumped on them early with great net play 7-1.  Marysville charged back a little but the Rusk girls held on to win 9-4.  This put them in the 5th/6th place match against King/Marquez from Independence who the girls lost to earlier this season 2-8.  Again Avery and Rylee came out very strong and got a good lead early.  Independence charged back and even called for a line judge on match point to try and rattle the sisters.  After about 10 match points for Wellington the sisters finally put the match away and won 9-6.  Unbelievable, I knew they could medal and they were good, but they went on a nice run this weekend.  6-1 at the state tournament for these two.  Avery went to state the two years she played.  Rylee ties the Wellington record for the highest place for a freshman with Kylie Aufdengarten taking 5th place.  Rylee also sets the all time single season win mark with 33 wins breaking Lexis Hibbs and Kaitlyn Buck's record with 32.  Avery Rusk is tied for 2nd getting 32 wins this season.  Avery finishes her two years with 51 career wins.  Rylee was also the highest placing freshman in this years state tournament.

Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten got a first round bye because they placed 2nd at regionals.  They faced Walker/McChristian from Ark City in the second round and won 6-1,6-0.  This pitted them against Holthaus/Williams from Marysville, a regional winner.  The match was tight at first, but Wellington prevailed 6-4,6-3.  The win in this quarterfinal match guaranteed the pair a top 4 finish.  Day 2 began against Ark City's Burr/Weathers the defending 5A state champions.  Ark City jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Adams and Aufdengarten responded winning 3 in a row to tie it up.  Ark City went up 4-3, and the rains hit delaying things for about 2 hours.  Ark City responded after the break winning 6-4.  In the next set Wellington jumped up 2-0, and then had a 4-3 lead on Ark City and the rains hit again.  After about a 15-20 minute wait Ark City again got it's composure and won again 6-4.  Seemed like every time we got the momentum the rains hit.  After the loss it sent Adams and Aufdengarten to the 3rd/4th place match where they met up with McPherson's Edmonson and Bruce another regional winner.  Wellington had the lead in the first set, but lost it at 5-6, then Wellington tied it up and a tiebreak was played.  Wellington jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but soon it was 5-4.  Wellington questioned a call at that time, so McPherson called a line judge on themselves.  After that the Wellington pair won 2 straight points to win the tiebreak.  In the next set Adams and Aufdengarten jumped up 3-0, but then all of a sudden it was tied at 3-3.  Wellington held the lead each time, and finally put the match away 6-4.  What an awesome weekend, we never talked about it but we wanted to finish higher than last year in a much deeper draw, but we didn't know if it was possible.  So proud of these two, Mekenna has given so much to this program.  Adams is the only Wellington tennis player to medal all 4 years taking 9th with Maggie Fink, 7th with Madison Adams, 5th with Aufdengarten, and now 3rd with Aufdengarten.  She ends her career with 109 wins which ranks 2nd behind Lexis Hibbs and Kaitlyn Buck who had 114.  Aufdengarten was the highest placing sophomore in the state tournament this year, and now has 56 career wins in two years.  We have some very big shoes to fill with us losing Mekenna, Avery, Abby, and Lexi Saffell.

Wellington finished 4th in 2009.

2017 REGIONAL @ Collegiate

UPDATE: Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017

Coach Brian Aufdengarten's Regional perspective:

"Day 1 was very exciting qualifying 5 of our players and all guaranteed a state trip on the first day.

Mekenna Adams & Kylie Aufdengarten received the #2 seed and won over Trinity and Andover Central putting them in the semifinals.

Avery Rusk & Rylee Rusk got the #4 seed and won over Pratt and in a thrilling three set match over Collegiate.  This put them in the semifinals also.

Abby Lowe seeded #7 probably pulled off the biggest upset on the day in any 4A regional.  She beat a Pratt player, then beat the #2 seed from Circle, an exchange student that came in 17-1.  This put her in the semifinals also.

Jacelyn Buck won her opening match over Augusta, but then lost to a Collegiate player.  This kept her alive for day 2.

Day 2 had its ups and downs, after a great first day.  We finished 1-6 in matches on the day.

Adams and Aufdengarten won their first match 6-0,6-1 over Andover Central.  Half that Andover Central team was state runner up in doubles last season.  This pitted them in the championship against the #1 seed from Collegiate.   We battled hard and played very well just didn't win a lot of deuce points and lost 6-2,6-4.  We played well Collegiate put their singles player that finished 2nd last year at state in doubles, they are pretty darn good.

The Rusk sisters came up short in both of their matches losing to Collegiate 6-1,6-3, and losing to Andover Central 6-3,6-3.  I'm proud of these two sometimes it is tough playing with a sibling and they've done really well.  The pair finished 4th overall.

Lowe also came up short on both her matches as she played against two very good Collegiate players.  Abby had such a nice day Friday, that might be one of the biggest upsets I've had by a singles player.  We didn't think of it as an upset necessarily, but that usually doesn't happen.  Lowe finished 4th.

Buck jumped up early against her player from Andover Central 2-0, but after the Andover Central player won 4 straight games, Buck never really recovered.  She just got frustrated with how things were going in the match.  She came close but with the loss was eliminated.

Team Standings

Collegiate 20

Andover Central 16

Wellington 15

Circle 7

Augusta 0

El Dorado 0

Pratt 0

Ulysses 0

Wichita Trinity 0

This was a tough regional, we are probably a stronger team this year, but we missed the runner-up plaque by 1 point.  We actually had more team points than we did last year when we took 2nd.  Collegiate was the only team to take their entire team out of this regional, all the rest of us knocked each other out."

AVCTL League Runners-Up 2017

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
AVCTL League @ Collegiate
Monday, Oct. 2, 2017

Head Girls Tennis Coach Brian Aufdengarten was very happy after Monday's action at Collegiate. It was AVCTL League Tournament time and our Lady Crusaders finished 2nd as a team - Coach Aufty indicated the team hadn't finished that high since 2010. Way to represent LADIES!!

Finishing 1st, Freshman Rylee Rusk beat a decent Winfield player in her first match, then defeated Scharenberg from Circle who was the #1 seed! In the finals, Rylee beat Withrow from Collegiate. Rylee came in 0-0 (Singles) and was the #4 seed. She had played doubles all season with sister Avery.

Finishing 3rd, Mekenna Adams and Avery Rusk beat the #4 seed from Buhler to open, then lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champion Collegiate, 4-6, 5-7. Mekenna and Avery went on to defeat Winfield in their final match. Mekenna and Avery came in 0-0 (Mekenna had paired with Kylie Aufdengarten and Avery with her sister Rylee all season) and were the #5 seed.

Finishing 2nd, Kylie Aufdengarten and Jacelyn Buck got the #2 seed and finished where they got seeded. They defeated El Dorado and Circle in their first two matches, but didn't have a lot of answers against the Lair sisters from Collegiate in the final.

Finishing 4th, Abby Lowe who had some long matches on the day after getting the #4 seed. Abby defeated McPherson in a super tiebreak, then lost to the #1 seed from Circle 4-6, 5-7. In her final match she lost in a super tiebreak to Nihart from Winfield.

"I'm very proud of the girls." Coach Aufdengarten

If this article was about WHS matches lost at the Kingman Invitational on Tuesday by our Varsity Girls Tennis squad, the article would end here. So instead, let's talk about the perfect day for the team and a career benchmark set by Senior Mekenna Adams.

Wellington dominated, 13-0 as a team in match play, 4 "1st" place finishes and of course on top of the team totals, defeating Buhler, Valley Center, Kingman, Haven and Nickerson. Here are the totals:

#1 Doubles Mekenna Adams (right) & Kylie Aufdengarten (left) went 3-0 also beating Kingman 7-0, then beating a Valley Center team that finished 5th at state in 5A last year 7-3.  In the finals they beat a good Buhler team 7-2.  Adams surpassed the 100 career win mark in her second match. Mekenna ended the day with her 101st career win. just sliding by her first cousin Erianne (graduated in 2012) who had 100 during her storied career too as a Lady Crusader tennis player. Only "5" previously in WHS history have hit the 100 win career mark. We now have 6! (Erianne Adams  100, Mekenna Adams 101, Dani Anderson 105, Kailey Jenkins 107, Kaitlyn Buck 114 and Lexis Hibbs 114).

WHS Girls Tennis 2017

Our Varsity Girls Tennis team saw their first action of the season Tuesday here at HOME at the 9th St. Courts. The Lady Crusaders hosted Eisenhower HS, Conway Springs (ranked 3rd in 3A) and Buhler (ranked 8th in 4A). Pre-season polls had placed Wellington at 5th in 4A. Obviously some good tennis was going to get played Tuesday and Wellington lead the way in that department, finishing FIRST as a team / check out these numbers:

In #1 Doubles, Senior Mekenna Adams and Sophomore Kylie Aufdengarten went 3-0 (8-3, 8-1, 8-4) on the day after going 1-2 in this same tournament last season. Both were also recently named as 1 of the top 10 Doubles Players in the State by "Varsity Kansas" (kansas.com). In #2 Doubles, Senior Avery Rusk and Freshman sibling Rylee Rusk also placed first, finishing at 2-1. (8-1, 8-2, 2-8) In #1 Singles, Senior Abby Lowe, in the toughest division of the day (with all players making the State Tourney last  year) battled hard and ended up 0-3. 2017 WHS GIRLS TENNIS TEAM PICS

Mekenna Adams SENIOR

The WHS Girls Tennis team has been hard at it all week, this first official week of FALL SPORT PRACTICES across the State. Coaches Brian Aufdengarten and Daphne Adams were putting the girls through their tennis rigors Thursday evening at the Crusader Courts on 9th St. They have a lot of fun at their sport and the coaches account for a lot of that. The numbers are down from last year but some very quality players returning for action this year nonetheless. They have a lot of talent, just not as much depth. "4" Seniors, all State Tournament Qualifiers last season will lead the Lady Crusaders this Fall. Mekenna Adams, Avery Rusk, Lexi Saffell and Abby Lowe. Mekenna has qualified for State and medaled all 3 of her underclassman seasons. A lot of excitement lies ahead for sure!

Their first Varsity action will be on Tue. Aug. 29th, hosting Buhler, Conway Springs and Eisenhower HS’s down at the 9th street courts. That action will get underway at 3:00PM. The weather Thursday evening at the courts was PERFECTO…very nice temperatures and not a puff of wind…perfect tennis conditions and the girls and coaches were enjoying it. The temps on the cement courts "seem" to get as high as 120 or so when it’s HOT & SUNNY so cooler weather this time of year is much appreciated no doubt! Probably won't last.

GOOD LUCK ON THE 29TH!!
