The WHS Cross Country team road-tripped west to the Chaparral HS Invitational Meet on Thursday, held at Anthony Lake. In the shade, not too bad except for intermittent walls of dirt created by a strong south wind and a field being plowed south of the race area.
Wellington High & Middle School combined, received 20 medals and had 17 personal records!
We had a 6th grade runner that came in 1st place, This was the 6th graders first race of the season!
We had enough entered for 5 team scores, team wise.. Wellington had 3 - 1st place teams, a 5th place & an 8th place team!

Chase Pfalzgraf and Mackenzie Heacock, qualified last weekend in Chanute for today's (Saturday) State 4A Cross Country Meet in Wamego! A big sendoff took place on Wednesday for Chase and Mackenzie (2 days early due to PT Conferences/No School) out at WHS. Unfortunate news was received today prior to the conclusion of the State Meet that Jr. Mackenzie Heacock had rolled her ankle Friday evening and would not be able to compete on Saturday. Not the outcome you want at a State event for sure.
For the 2nd time in about as many weeks, a STATE 4A sendoff took place at WHS, this time for Cross Country runners Senior Chase Pfalzgraf and Junior Mackenzie Heacock. Chase and Mackenzie both qualified for the State 4A Meet at Wamego this Saturday. Action gets underway at 11AM at the Wamego Country Club. Many students, staff, the awesome Crusader Band, and others were on hand in support!
Congratulations to SR. CHASE PFALZGRAF and JR. MACKENZIE HEACOCK, both have qualified for the STATE 4A MEET in Wamego (Country Club) next weekend. Chase finished 7th in the Boys 5K, Mackenzie finished 10th in the Girls 5K (her personal best time, bettering her time on the All-Time Best List @ WHS where she remains "1st" on the list.)

Fall practices continue, wrapping up their first week with the start of school just around the corner. Students will return to class on Tuesday (Aug. 21st), regular season action in Football, Volleyball, Girls Tennis, Girls Golf and Cross Country will soon follow! This Fall at WMS, something occurred that really doesn't occur very often so it is worthy of mention! It's a very notable year when anyone makes the All-Time Top 10 List at anything. Between early September and early October this Fall, three young Knights, (a 6th grader and "2" 7th graders), all made the WMS 7th Gr Boys Cross Country All-Time TOP 10 List..."3" boys in "ONE" season, on a list that has existed since 1991! That's pretty spectacular!
The 2017 WMS and WHS Cross Country teams opened their season(s) on the road Tuesday at Valley Center. "7" HS and "2" MS runners received medals. Next action will be here at HOME this Saturday out at Hargis Creek Watershed. MS races begin at 8AM, HS races @ 9:30AM. All races will start and end "down in the valley" behind KFC. Between 500-600 runners will be on hand from well over a dozen schools. Always a great event! Fans are reminded not to park in the perimeter businesses near the watershed.
WMS / WHS 2017 CROSS COUNTRY ANNOUNCEMENT
2017 Cross Country Practice for grades 6-12 (Boys & Girls).
First practice, Monday, August 14th, at 8 a.m., near the track area, behind the middle school.
Practice will finish at the 9th street practice field, north of the football field.
Athletes MUST have a physical, signed by a physician and parent/guardian.

The Wellington Crusaders had "6" student-athletes in competition on Saturday at the Regional 4A Cross Country Meete at El Dorado State Park.
In the Girls 5K, Mackenzie Heacock broke her own WHS School Record with her personal best time of 22.21, finishing 13th. Mackenzie missed qualifying for the State 4A Cross Country Meet next weekend at Wamego by just 1 place. Katrina Dvorak finished 36 with a time of 24.57.
The WHS Cross Country team represented quite well Thursday at the AVCTL League Meet in Buhler...Chase Pfalzgraf and Mackenzie Heacock received 1st Team All League Honors. Tyler Brown and Katrina Dvorak rec'd 2nd Team All League Honors! Congrats to all "4"!!

The WMS runners had a good showing Tuesday, coming in 2nd place, missing the League Title by just 1 point! Winfield ran both Div. IV (us) and Div. III (other teams) together in each race and it was Hard to determine where we were in the race with another division on the field.
7th Grader Jax Cornejo placed 7th on the ALL Time Best Top 10 list. We came home with 8 Personal Records, 5 individual medals and second place team medals for the 7th grade boys.
Both the WMS and WHS Cross Country squads were in action at the Oxford Invitational which is always held in Winfield at the Kansas Veterans Home located due north of both the Winfield middle and high schools on Viking Blvd. It was HOT and it was WINDY...here are the individual WMS & WHS results:
There were several WHS student-athletes on the road Thursday and many achieved some awesome results. The Varsity Girls Tennis Team was in a large invitational in Ark City and finished 5th as a team out of 16 teams! The Varsity Girls Golf Team was in Circle at their invitational. Freshman Peyton Ginter finished 5th, another of (4-5) Top 10 Finishes this season.
The annual Wellington Cross Country Invitational was held Saturday morning out at Hargis Creek Watershed, featuring 677 runners from 30 or so HS's and MS's combined. The weather was perfect, sunshine, no wind, nice temps...great morning to run (or watch). Wellington MS and HS had several runners in the mix - here are those with top 20 finishes, all finishers can be found at links below - great job Knights, Lady Knight, Crusaders and Lady Crusaders!
Fall Sports across the State of Kansas gets underway today, Monday, Aug. 14th! The WHS Volleyball and WHS Football squads got an early start on the day and the season, the former began @ 6:00AM, the latter 6:30AM. Both are holding 2-a-days all week so it won't be long until regular season action across the board gets underway. Also starting this morning at 8:00AM were the 6th-12th grade Cross Country athletes. Nearly 50 of them met behind WMS for 1st day stuff and then headed over towards 9th street for some running.
