It's been a great season for the Lady Crusader Wrestlers! District Champions! Regional Champions! State Champion (Anna Cullens), State Medalists Kaitlyn Hain & Averie Burns.
Coach McComb had this to say about the 3 DIV II STATE TOURNAMENT participants from Wellington High School.
"Anna Cullens (109 lbs) came up from the middle school with a love for the sport of wrestling. Her desire to be great has pushed her to the level she is! Anna wrestles year-round, attends camps and clinics to enhance her skills, she even has a wrestling mat in her garage! Anna gets up every morning at 5am to work out and stay in shape".
*Kaitlyn Hain (132 lbs) had older brothers that wrestled which probably increased her interest in the sport. She is tough as nails, works hard to get better.Kaitlyn was by far in the toughest weight class in the state. Kaitlynn pinned the runner-up at 138 in a match at Bluestem earlier this year."
*Averie Burns (235 lbs) started her wrestling career on December 1, 2020. She is friends with Kaitlyn and Keeli (team manager). Averie was originally recruited to be a manager as well but was asked if she wanted to wrestle instead and said yes. Averie struggled at first but kept a positive attitude. She was 0-7 going into the Wichita South Tournament. Had been beaten by every girl in her bracket. Everything started clicking for Averie and she went 3-1 that day and finished 2nd in the tournament! After the 0-7 start, she has gone 6-5".
Coach feels "the future looks bright for girls wrestling. With all 3 State placers this year, returning next year. There are 6 others that should be coming back and "2" 8th graders will be moving up to the high school to wrestle.Girl wrestling has taken off and offers great scholarship opportunities at many colleges and universities!"
Anna is Coach McComb's first State Champion, He was the assistant coach when Cody Page won in 2008 and he practiced daily with E.K. Franks when he won his first state title. The middle school program is very important to the high school program, both girls and boys. Coach, as a student-athlete back in the day, didn't enjoy wrestling until it became a "team sport" to him. Middle school is often the first exposure to the sport for many of the kids. He and Coach DeJarnett recruit as many WMS football players as they can to provide them with that exposure to the sport. Many of those wrestle now or did in the past. Lujan, Groom, Young and Wright, all examples. This season was Coach McComb's 9th season as head coach at WHS! GO BIG RED!!
