REGIONAL 4A BASEBALL @ Hibbs Hooten Field
Monday, May 18, 2015
The Wellington Crusaders went on a roller coaster ride at Hibbs-Hooten Field on Monday in Regional 4A Tournament baseball action. A last inning rally in their opener to defeat Winfield 2-1 after trailing the entire game extended their season in a dramatic fashion but the excitement would soon die down when the Rose Hill Rockets in the championship final jumped out early and strong on the our boys in red and never looked back. After 5 innings, Rose Hill was State 4A Tournament bound, final score 11-0. The Crusaders end their season at 12-6 but as Co-Champs in AVCTL DIV IV w/ Andale.

WHS VARSITY BOYS TENNIS
@ STATE 4A TOURNAMENT (PRATT)
Friday, May 15, 2015
The following report was filed by Head Boys Tennis Coach Allen Keller:
WHS’s 2 doubles teams performed very poorly at the Boys 4A State Tennis Tournament and neither were able to finish in the top 12 for medals. Partially because our #1 team of Pettegrew/Edwards were the recipients of the worst draw possible (thanks to the flip of a coin) and partially because we had trouble executing routine forehands. For Long/Adams, it was simply a case of a young team being out matched and out-gunned by better equipped and more experienced teams. They battled hard against Waugh/Philbreck of Altamont/Labette County in their first match and then against Haney/Bailey of Winfield but came up short both matches and were eliminated. Although Pettegrew/Edwards were one of the top 8 teams going in and got a 1st round bye, (#1 and #2 finishers from each of the 4 Regions get byes) they knew (after the seeding meeting) they would most likely play Williams/Aizawa from McPherson for their first match of the day. Prior to Regionals, Williams/Aizawa were one of the top 4 teams in the State and secured the #1 seed in their Regional Tournament. However, at the last minute prior to their Regional Tournament, the McPherson coach decided to blend their top 2 singles players (Martin/Schrader) into a 2nd doubles team for Regionals. The two McPherson teams met in the semi-finals of the Smoky Valley Regional and Martin/Schrader beat Williams/Aizawa and went on to finish 1st in the Regional with Williams/Aizawa taking 3rd. At the State Tournament, #3 finishers in the various Regions play #6 finishers from other Regionals in the first round and #4 finishers play #5 finishers. The only stiff competition Tyler/Brock would have in the 2nd round would be if Williams/Aizawa (a #3 finisher but a highly ranked team all year) ended up in our area of the bracket playing a weak #6 finisher… which is exactly what happened. Not only did they win their first round easily, they knocked Tyler/Brock into the consolation bracket… and did it with a very convincing 6-0, 6-0 win. That was just the start of a very bad day not only for us, but also for brothers Josh/Sam Hilger from Independence, who were the overall #1 doubles team in the tournament. They lost a very close heartbreaker against Bellah/Reinart from Smoky Valley and suddenly their dreams of a State Championship were also gone. The worst part though (for us) was that they ended up in our section of the consolation bracket. So, after winning one consolation match against Nelson/Stroud of Chapman 9-3, our fine Wellington team had the unfortunate set of circumstances of having to now play the #1 ranked team in 4A just to stay alive and try for a 5th place finish. Of course it didn’t happen, and their season ended with a 5-9 loss to a very discouraged but very good Independence team. So the Tennis Gods were not favorable to Wellington on May 15, 2015 and somehow, in out of 3 matches played for the day, we had to play 2 of the top 3 teams in the State just because a Paola coach called heads instead of tails.

Wellington forfeited the #1 Singles spot (VC put one of their players in that spot and called them “Wellington”) and the JV Crusaders finished tied for 4th place. Even though #1 Doubles (Weston Driskell/Jared Oathout) went 1 win/2 losses in pool play, they still finished 1st in that pool and got to play the other pool winner for 1st and 2nd place. They lost that match in a tiebreaker and finished 2nd with silver medals. # 2 doubles (James Hinman/Ahmed Mohammed) also had 1 win/2 losses in pool play and got to play for 3rd and 4th place. They won that match and finished 3rd with bronze medals. Our #2 singles entry (Avery Rademacher) also had a 1 win/2 losses record in pool play and only had the opportunity to play for 5th or 6th place. He lost in that match to a very good Bishop Carrol player and took 6th place. Pretty good day considering the tough competition!

KINGMAN EAGLE CLASSIIC
Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014
The Wellington Crusader Basketball squad, now 3-0 on the season, won the 2014 Kingman Eagle Classic Saturday, downing the host Kingman in the Championship Final 62-54. The last time the Wellington "BOYS" won the Classic was back in December of 2007. (They also won it in 2006!) The Crusaders pulled away from the Eagles in the 2nd half and were able to maintain a 10 pt. margin or so throughout the latter parts of the contest. Trevor Nance ripped the nets for 27 pts. - tournament total for Nance - 67 pts! Tyler Pettegrew "swished" in 12, followed by Wesley Gilmore with 8, Connor Phelps with 7, Ian King with 6 and A.J. Snipes with 2. Congratulations CRUSADERS - The HARDWARE is YOURS!
In earlier action Saturday afternoon, our 1-1 Lady Crusadersplayed in the 3rd place game vs Haven but came up short 44-52 to finish fourth. Lauryn Snipes scored 14, followed by Avery Rusk 11, Tayland French 10, Shayland French 4, Taylor Zimmerman 2, MeKenna Adams 2 and Madi Lewellen 1. The loss drops the young group to 1-2 with lots of basketball to come!

4A Sub-State Tourney - HERE
Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014
"1" of 8, 4A Volleyball Sub-States was held Saturday afternoon at Wellington High School, featuring (by seeding) - (1) Andale, (2) Wellington, (3) Mulvane and (4) Winfield.
Each school was accompanied by a large contingent of fans so the main gym was rockin' at times as a State 4A qualifier was determined after the following "3" matches - note that all matches were won in just "2" sets so the tourney went fast as the 2014 seasons for 3 of the 4 teams would end abruptly before the sun could even set...
The Lady Crusaders gave it a valiant effort but it just wasn't meant to be this time around. Kudos to our Lady Crusaders who finished the season with a record of 22-16, the MOST WINS in a season ever for a WHS Volleyball Squad!! Awesome! And if there is a silver lining (and there always is), the squad loses only "2" young ladies to graduation this year so the nucleus of this year's record setting bunch will be back for 2015 and more than likely, back with a vengeance. Can't wait!
MATCH 1: Andale vs Winfield 25-17 / 25-9
(Andale Wins)
MATCH 2: Wellington vs Mulvane 25-18, 25-22
(Mulvane Wins)
MATCH 3: Andale vs Mulvane 25-12, 25-20
(Andale Wins - Sub-State 4A Champ!)
One side note - WHS Head Coach Alison Widen and her husband are new proud parents of a baby boy - congratulations to them both!!

Schabel, Independence, def. Lindahl, Chanute, 9-1; 9. Hoover, Pratt, def. Muller, Hayden, 9-3; 11. Adams, Wellington, def. Coleman, Hayden, 9-3.
Doubles — 1. Steffen-Nachtigal, Buhler, def. Lybarger-Groene, Winfield, 6-4, 6-1; 3. Holle-Ediger, McPherson, def. Julian-Miller, Independence, 6-2, 6-2; 5. Hoffman-Ivers, McPherson, def. Morrical-Bellah, Smoky Valley, def. Graham-Powell, Winfield, 9-5.
Coach Aufdengarten offered these thoughts on the tournament and the season:
"Bittersweet ending to the tennis season, we sent both of our varsity seniors out making the state tournament and both earning medals.
After playing 3 years in doubles Peyton Adams made the switch to the singles side. We've had 2 goals all year - Lets make state and let's get a medal. A state medal has eluded Peyton for the past two years. Day 1 didn't start real well for Peyton when she dropped her opening round match to Muller from Hayden 6-4,3-6,11-13. The loss dropped Peyton to the backside where she found her game and beat Nisley from Nickerson 9-2, then beat a hard hitting Gibson from Bishop Miege 9-2. The win qualified Peyton for day 2 and a guaranteed medal spot. Peyton had to open up Saturday with the state runner up last season Ediger from McPherson. Peyton dropped the match 9-2, then pitted her against Muller from Hayden again. Muller got the upper hand again winning 9-7. In Adams last match she found another Hayden player Coleman but Peyton played outstanding winning 9-3. Adams placed 11th overall and accomplished the two goals set at the beginning of the year.
Wellington's other senior Maggie Fink also set a goal at the beginning of the year after being one match away with then partner Madison Adams, to make state. This year she paired up with freshman Mekenna Adams and the pair had an amazing weekend going 5-2 overall. The pair opened with a win over Baldwin 6-3,6-1. Their next match was against regional winner Independence and the Wellington pair nearly pulled off an upset but lost 6-2,3-6,3-10. They also fell to the backside of the bracket and also pulled off two matches in a row beating Wamego 9-0, and Pratt 9-3. On Saturday the pair also had to open up with the best backside team Mcpherson and lost 0-9. We told them the score didn't show the closeness of that match with around 5 games going to deuce and we didn't win. Fink and Adams then put that match behind them and beat Smoky Valley 9-5 then beat Chanute 9-2. For Fink she surpassed her goal of getting to state but she and Adams finished with a 9th place medal to cap off a great season.
Wellington's doubles of Madison Adams and Ryleigh Buck just narrowly missed playing on day 2. The pair had the longest wait of any team in the tournament because of their first round bye. The pair waited from 9:00 until they finally got on the court after 1:30. That long wait probably hurt us we started slow against a team that already had a match played in Independence. Wellington dropped the first set 3-6, but then came alive and won 6-1. In the third set tiebreaker Independence came out on top 10-3. Adams and Buck then beat Parsons on the backside 9-2. In their next match the Wellington pair played Hayden and it was an even match throughout ties at 5-5, but after a close line call against Wellington, we became a little flustered and gave Hayden an extra game. Adams and Buck battled back after being down 8-5 to send the match to a tiebreak, but Wellington lost the heartbreaking match 7-4. Madison and Ryleigh played so good for us all year and played a tough #1 doubles schedule, at one time out of 29 matches they had played 19 state qualifiers. I'm very proud of these two for making to state for the first time they didn't play their best this weekend and ran into a tough bracket. What is great is all the girls contributed to our team scores. Wellington placed 8th out of 23 teams.
I'm very proud of our team this year, the girls supported each other so well and it was a fun team to coach. A big shoutout to many Wellington students and to all the parents, grandparents, and friends that came out to support the team and to Crusader Club. Thanks to Steve Stugis, Tracy McCue, Nate Jones, James Jordan, and KLEY for the coverage throughout the year"

@ Winfield
Friday, Oct. 17, 2014
Coach Aufdengarten filed this report after DAY 1:
Wellington has 3 players still playing on Day 2.
Singles Peyton Adams lost her first match to Muller from Topeka Hayden in 3 sets, then she had to win 2 matches in a row to be able to play on Saturday. She beat Nisley from Nickerson and beat Gibson from Bishop Miege. She will open Saturday against Ediger from Mcpherson.
Doubles Maggie Fink & Mekenna Adams won their first match over Baldwin, then lost in 3 sets to a regional winner from Independence. They also had to win two matches and beat Wamego and Pratt. They will open play with Mcpherson also.
Doubles Madison Adams & Ryleigh Buck had a rough outing and lost a gut wrenching match at the end. They dropped their opening match in 3 sets to Independence, then beat Parsons. In their final match they lost to Topeka Hayden in a tiebreaker.
Weird things happen on brackets. When I saw the matchups after everyone had lost their first match I knew our #2 doubles possibly had an easier path. Sometimes with the way regionals are lopsided with good players, one part of the bracket ends up a little harder. We probably found that out the hard way Friday. I'm proud of our girls playing on Saturday and extremely proud of Madison and Ryleigh also on the whole year.

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
@ Winfield (AVCTL League Meet)
Monday, Oct. 6, 2014
(Report filed by Head Coach Brian Aufdengarten)
Collegiate - 65 McPherson - 63 Winfield - 43 WELLINGTON - 41 El Dorado - 27 Buhler - 23 Circle - 13 Augusta - 2
Pretty happy on team performance - we finished 5th last season and we thought we could get 4th, and almost pulled off 3rd as a team.
#1 singles Peyton Adams finished 3rd overall going 2-1 on the day. Peyton struggled a little in her opening match against a girl from Circle that got a lot of balls back and didn't like to hit with much pace on the ball. She held on and won then met the 2 time state doubles champ Lindwall from Collegiate. Lindwall won the match but Adams hit very well and got her back in her groove. In her final match she beat Groene from Winfield 6-1,6-1. That was a great match to finish on.
#2 singles Auni Williams finished 5th which is the seed she was seeded. She lost her opening match to El Dorado, then beat Augusta 9-1. In her final match she had an amazing comeback against Wicks from Circle after being down 6-0. Williams started making less errors and took an 8-7 lead then it went to a tiebreak and Williams won. It's the second time this year Wicks has been up on Auni 6-1 and Auni has come from behind to beat her.
#1 doubles Madison Adams & Ryleigh Buck had probably the toughest bracket on the day and took 4th place. Their opening match they beat a very good Winfield team 7-5,6-4. Winfield put their #1 singles girl in doubles today and she will be the 1 seed at regionals on Friday. Next the pair had to play the state doubles champions from McPherson and got to 2-2 in each set, but dropped the match 6-2,6-2. In their final match the pair had to play the 3rd place team from state Buhler. The first set was very very close with the Wellington pair dropping it 7-5, Buhler went on to win set two 6-2. Madison and Ryleigh played well today and could make some noise at regionals.
#2 doubles Maggie Fink & Mekenna Adams also took 4th place. They opened up with an easy win over Buhler 6-2,6-1. They then played Collegiate and battled hard at the end of each set but spotted Collegiate a big lead in each set and lost 6-2,6-2. In their final match against Winfield the pair dropped a three set battle to the winfield team who had their regular #2 singles player pairing with half their doubles team. I felt good about how close their match was because their two singles player is pretty strong we will see a different team at regionals.
4A Regionals in Pratt this Friday and Saturday.

"A" Team
WMS lost in 2 sets / 14-25, 13-25
The A team Lady Knights lost to Rose Hill last night. We just gave up halfway through. We just didn't play like I know we can play. The girls have every ability to compete with the tough Rose Hill team. We have a lot of talent on our team and we will have to work hard and establish mental toughness before taking them on at our league tournament in a couple of weeks. The A team Lady Knights are now 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
"B" Team
WMS won in 2 sets / 25-21, 25-18
Our B team came out and took control of the game fast. Taylor Meyer gave the Lady Rockets quite a bit of trouble from the serving line; she had 17 ace serves on the night. Darian Blackburn was on fire at the attack line, earning 10 kills overall. Abby Hibbs and Peyton Leathers were also great from the attack line. Carrie Nuss and Kileigh Peninger made some very key defensive plays at the net and from the back row. Very proud of how the girls came out and played. The B team Lady Knights are now 9-3 on the season and 5-0 in league play.

Tuesday, Sep. 23, 2014
Tuesday Wellington went to Wichita Collegiate and competed in an 8 team tournament. Overall Wellington placed 4th in a pretty good field of teams.
Top finisher was #1 singles Peyton Adams who finished 3rd overall going 2-1. Peyton beat to very steady players - LeFevre from Goddard and Gmeiner from Newton. She lost to Hauserman from Salina Central.
#1 doubles Ryleigh Buck & Madison Adams finished 4th on the day, but got a little revenge on Sailors/Wong from Newton. Last week we lost to Newton after we had a tough match against McPherson, but today we played them in the opening match and looked alot better and won. Buck/Adams then lost to the 3A state champions from last year Lindwall/Osland 8-3. This match actually had about 5 deuce points that we lost. Wellington then lost to a state qualifer team from last season from Goddard.
#2 Doubles Cajen Shore & Dietra Sober finished 4th overall going 2-2 on the day. They beat Newton and Neodesha then dropped matches to Winfield and Collegiate.
#2 Singles Madi Lewellen lost two close matches to Cole from Goddard 6-8 and in her final match against Gile from Newton in a tiebreak.
Wellington plays in the 20 team Tournament of Champions this weekend at Collegiate.

Wellington finished 2nd behind Conway Springs in the 8 team field. We had everyone in a medal match at the end of the day and brought home two second place finishes, a third place finish, and fourth place finish. We gave many of our varsity girls the day off after Thursdays meet and everyone we took had a good day. Our depth of our team showed today.
#1 singles Dietra Sober finished 3rd overall she went 3-1 on the day.
#2 singles Jaylynn Luna finished 2nd overall and she went 3-1 also.
Both singles did well both played their first matches of the year in singles. It shows that our girls are very versatile.
#1 doubles Auni Williams and Madison Lewellen finished 4th overall going 2-2. I was pleased with these two, they had the toughest bracket with very good state teams from Conway Springs and Haven.
#2 doubles Alexis Hinman and Noelle Wright took 2nd place and lost a heartbreaker 8-6 to Conway Springs in the championship. These two played well today and really took care do business all day.

“I was very happy with our performance in the huge tournament. This tournament is tougher than the state tournament. Many big name teams and highly ranked teams. Many teams were commenting about our Wellington team and they had no idea that we had a solid team. We were hoping to place around 12th to 13th range going in and everyone get a win.
Doubles Madison Adams and Ryleigh Buck won their first two matches to make it to the quarterfinals. They beat a team from Salina South 9-3 and then a solid Maize South team 9-3. They then played a very good match against the state champion team from McPherson and lost 3-9, but many of the games were very close. The pair then dropped a match to Newton and also to McPherson's other doubles team to finish 8th. This was a great showing for our two girls, the doubles field was awesome.
Singles Peyton Adams also had a good showing winning her first match over an exchange student from Newton. Peyton's next opponent was Dohee Lee the defending state champ in 5A and she dropped that match 0-9. Adams then lost to Sarnacki from Winfield 3-9, and then bounced back to beat Piani from Kapaun 9-5, and Burghart from McPherson 9-3 to take 13th.
Doubles Maggie Fink and Mekenna Adams probably got the worst 1st round drawing playing the 2 time defending state champions from Kapaun. The pair dropped the match 2-9. They then bounced back and beat Campus 9-4 and lost a heartbreaker to a solid Andover team in a tiebreaker. Then the pair got a default win over Maize South and won their final match over Andover Central 9-3 good for 21st.
Singles Auni Williams went 2-3 on the day good for 26th. She lost to Cabrera from Ark City, then lost a tiebreaker to LeFevre from Goddard. Williams then pulled off a great win beating last years 4th place finisher in doubles from Wichita Collegiate Maloney 9-4. She then beat Whitten from Bishop Carroll 9-1, and fell to Meier from Winfield in her final match.
Pretty exciting day, didn't know if we even belonged in a tournament like this but I think our team stepped up and rose to the occasion. We still have a lot of room for improvement which is nice because we didn't play our best and still did well.”

"My 8th grade B team is look very strong going into their tournament on Saturday in Circle. We are now 3-0 on the season. Last night in Winfield Taylor Meyer and Abby Hibbs both were strong at the attack line. Kileigh Peninger and Jadyn Wolf were fantastic at the serving line, both had several ace serves. Carrie Nuss was outstanding defensively, not only in digs but at the net as well. Coach Swingle and myself are expecting great things tomorrow in Circle!
The 8th grade A team pulled out a tough win last night in Winfield. We struggle at the serving line, with everyone on the team making foot fault errors. We did have some other issues we need to address defensively in practice today before we head into our first Tri in El Dorado on Monday. But, overall I am proud of how our girls pushed through and were able to pull out a win in two sets. Being mentally tough is a huge deal and to be able to display that last night at the middle school is impressive. Reese Heasty and Delaney Parkey gave Winfield some difficulty with their serves. Brooke McCorkle and Jacelyn Buck had some great attacks, both with several kills last night. Chloe Wilson continues to show her strength at the net. Adrienne Norris, Ellie Buresh and Kamryn Prindle played well and had some unbelievable saves defensively. Looking forward to the Tri against El Dorado and Ark City on Monday."

Tuesday, Sep. 16, 2014
Coach Brian Aufdengarten "Really proud of the girls we haven't won this tournament the past couple years. Had some very good performances on the day." Wellington - 21 Conway Springs - 20 Goddard Eisenhower - 19 South Barber - 0 #1 singles Peyton Adams won her second championship in three meets. She beat two solid players Watson from Goddard 8-4, and Robinson from Conway 8-5. Peyton tweaked her ankle this weekend but her mobility looked pretty good. #2 singles Auni Williams dropped her opening match and then bounced back to beat two Conway Springs players. In the match to decide 2nd/3rd she beat Bellar 8-5. Auni's last match was a very good quality match and she played well. #1 doubles Maggie Fink & Mekenna Adams placed 2nd overall and played some very exciting tennis. They went 2-1 beating South Barber and a strong Goddard team. In the final match they lost to a senior pair from Conway Springs who finished 3rd at state last season 8-6. They played well and had a chance, out of 14 games 8 of them went to deuce. We have two decent doubles teams and Maggie and Mekenna proved they are a good team today. #2 doubles Alexis Hinman & Noelle Wright finished 1-2 good for 3rd. They lost to Goddard but came back to win against South Barber. In their final match they battled hard against good team from Conway. Coach Aufdengarten offers these remarks on Saturday's action at Pratt
"We had a good day with all the girls we took to the meet medaling again. We kind of showed the depth we have on our team.
#1 doubles Madison Adams & Ryleigh Buck played some really good tennis after a so so day last Thursday. Went 4-0 on the day for 1st place.
#1 singles Peyton Adams finished 3rd. She's getting some of the rustiness out as it was her second meet coming off the concussion.
#2 singles Lexi Saffell played great for us. Many people underestimate her because of her size but she returns a lot of balls and makes opponents make
mistakes. She finished 3-1 good for 2nd.
#2 doubles Cajen Shore & Madison Lewellen did very well also. They went 3-1 and finished 2nd. They never have played with each other and practiced for
about 30 minutes the day before the meet with each other."

There is a lot of talent on our A team this year. In last week's win against Mulvane we did have some rotation and coverage issues that we worked hard this past week to perfect. Last night the Lady Knights came out looking much better as a team and had many outstanding plays verses Clearwater. Chloe Wilson, Reese Heasty, and Brooke McCorkle did a great job defending at the net the past two games. Back row coverage is looking good due to some key defensive players: Adrienne Norris, Kamryn Prindle, Ellie Buresh and Jacelyn Buck. They do a great job moving to the ball and ensuring they give our setters, Delaney Parkey and Reese Heasty, good passes. From the attack line, Ellie Buresh, Jacelyn Buck, Chloe Wilson, Brooke McCorkle, Adrienne Norris, and Reese Heasty have each had many kills within the past two matches. We need to work on becoming 100% from the serving line, that has definitely been a weak spot the past two weeks. I know that we have some stiff competition coming up and we definitely have room for improvement. The Lady Knights are now 2-0 on the season and will be travelling to Winfield next Thursday.
8B - Wellington WON in 2 sets: 25-14 / 25-14
We have an unbelievable B team squad this year. This group of ladies work hard every day and it definitely shows in game play. The past two weeks they have defeated their opponents (Mulvane and Clearwater) by at least 10 points - earning them a 2-0 record. Carrie Nuss and Kileigh Peninger have both been very strong at the net as well as been very successful in making plays happen for the team. Jadyn Wolf, Abby Hibbs, Sierra Rademacher, and Emma Rains have all been great defensively - great passing percentages! On the offense side of things Peyton Leathers, Taylor Meyer, Darian Blackburn, and Paige Yoder have been aggressive and had several kills each week. Coach Swingle and myself are expecting great things this season from this team!

Tuesday, Sep, 9, 2014
The Varsity Volleyball Squad stands at 6-4 on the season, losing against McPherson in 2 sets and winning in 2 sets against Mulvane - here's a report filed by Coach Widen following the matches:
25-10, 25-12 / McPherson won both sets...we didn't play Wellington Volleyball. We need to get more aggressive and competitive when we play tough teams like McPherson. I didn't feel we played as good as we could have...we still have a long way to go.
25-13, 25-19 / We won both sets...again, I don't think we played the type of Volleyball that Wellington can. I was happy we won in 2 but not happy with our performance. The girls are so much better than what they showed at McPherson...I am looking forward to hard week of practice and next Tuesday.

I was very proud of all of the girls. They competed hard and played well especially for the beginning of the season. It is exciting to get out there and see how the girls will compete. This is a tough meet; so to be able to come away with the team trophy was awesome! Coach Daphne Adams

WHS VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS
vs Buhler, Goddard Eisenhower, Conway Springs
Tuesday, Sep. 2, 2014
WHS Participants: Madison Adams, Ryleigh Buck, Maggie Fink, MeKenna Adams, Auni Williams, Madison Lewellen
Coach Brian Aufdengarten filed this summary of the tournament held at 9th St. Courts...
Happy with first meet we are going to get better as the season goes on but I'm pleased for our first meet. #1 doubles was very tough - Madison and Ryleigh going 2-1 was really good. Beat a tough Goddard team and and really good Conway Springs team that took 3rd at state last year in 3A. The Buhler team also finished 3rd at state in 4A last year. Also at #2 doubles Maggie and Mekenna have a chance to be a really good team. Beat a Conway Springs team where Jones finished 9th at state last season. Both doubles will get better but showed us what they are capable of. Auni went 0-3 but battled so hard at #1 singles. She led in every match and came up just short in each but showed us how close she is. Madison Lewellen did very well also, she got really tired by her last match but she usually plays doubles but her doubles partner can't play this year. She did great taking 2nd. This is a good first meet Conway Springs is ranked 3rd in 3A and Buhler 6th in 4A. We actually split with Conway Springs as a team. We have more work but the potential is there.
The Varsity Lady Crusaders are in action again on the 9th, and again here at home vs Collegiate, Chaparral and Kingman.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL
Winfield HS Early Bird Tournament
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014
An energized group of Lady Crusaders got off to a great start Saturday at the Winfield HS Early Bird Invitational Volleyball Tournament, defeating Wichita Trinity in 3 sets, 25-13, 25-27 and 25-17.Last year Wellington lost to Trinity in 2 sets, 14-25 and 15-25. The Ladies In Red would battle hard all day, winning 4 of 6 matches total. In addition to the win over Trinity, we chalked up wins against Buhler, Winfield and Ark City. The 2 losses (close losses) on the day came against El Dorado and Conway Springs. The latter are mostly SENIORS, very tall SENIORS! Good day overall for the Lady Crusaders
