15 yo's @ 3-0 advance / 10 yo's fall to 2-1 but still in the hunt!
Wellington's 15 yo's, coached by Jeff DeJarnett continue their winning ways at the Babe Ruth State Tournament being held in Peabody this weekend. Today (Monday) is single elimination bracket day and Wellington's 3-0 record in pool play since Friday has placed them in the bracket as the #1 Seed (out of their pool) vs Rose Hill #2 Seed (out of the other pool) and will play at 12:30pm today. The winner will advance to the 3:00PM State Championship Game vs either Liberal (who Wellington beat on Sunday 10-5) or Columbus who are also 3-0 going into bracket play today. Liberal beat Wellington last year in the first round of the championship bracket 9-6 and went on to win the 2016 State Babe Ruth Crown. Coach DeJarnett has used his pitchers sparingly throughout this year's tournament - all will be available for mound action today Coach "D" indicated after their 3rd win on Sunday. In Wellington's 10-5 victory over Liberal Sunday, Malachi Macias was named MVP and Cade Fairbanks earned the WOW Award for our home town boys. Congrats to both of them and the team! Bring home the "big" hardware gentlemen!! The overall winner in Peabody advances to Regional Babe Ruth Tournament action in Junction City July 26-30!
In Harper at the 10 yo State Cal Ripken Tournament, our Wellington team (now 2-1 in pool play) suffered their first loss falling to 3-0 Pittsburg by the final score 1-9 on Sunday. Wellington will play the "Rattlers" at 9AM this morning (think that is Liberal) in single elimination bracket play. If they win, they will advance to the Championship game this afternoon at 1:30PM. The on-line bracket for the 10 yo tournament hasn't been updated for today's games or the other remaining teams so can't provide any further info at this time. In Sunday's loss to Pittsburg, Brody Weir was named MVP and Axl Norris received the WOW Award for his efforts on the field. Congratulations to both of them and good luck to Coach Jesus Jimenez and the 10 yo's today as they vie for the State 10U Cal Ripken Championship, just 30 mins west of Wellington this morning. Should they ultimately prevail today, they'll be heading rather soon to Sterling, CO for Regional Cal Ripken action there July 20-25!
The 16-18 yo Sr. Babe Ruth State Tournament wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Sellers. (Both Wellington teams came up short of bracket play on Sunday so weren't in action). SEE STORY HERE The "4" that did make it out of pool play were Junction City vs Abilene and Cottonwood Valley vs Liberal. In Sunday's opener, Junction City downed Abilene 13-0 and then Liberal downed Cottonwood Valley 8-1. In a very close State Championship battle that followed Sunday afternoon, Liberal squeaked by Junction City 8-7 to claim the State 16-18 yo Crown and will represent as "KANSAS" at the Regional in Junction City later this week! Junction City will be the host team so their loss in Wellington @ State didn't translate into season over just yet.
The AH2P AWARD went to Liberal's Cole Evans. The TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD went to Junction City.
Again, good luck to the 10 yo's and the 15 yo's - today is a BIG DAY for both!!
