The Varsity Crusaders 2021 season ends but with some positive moments, this week and last for sure. In the first half at Andover Central, the defense was solid and surprised the Jaguars with numerous stops, forcing punts and turnovers. Some miscues on offense took away opportunities to score and by halftime, the home team Jaguars began to pull away. One highlight for me at the game, as departing, I heard what appeared to be two Jaguar dads talking about Wellington as I made my way through a small crowd of folks. "Wellington has a lot of tradition, and I admire that".

The JV IRONDUKES hosted ROSE HILL Monday evening at Sellers Park. A back and forth game throughout, Wellington was able to wrap it up in the end. The Rockets ran out of timeouts and a couple kneel-downs sealed the deal for the home team. Congrats Crusaders!

A game never in question Monday evening. The WHS JV Football squad hosted their counterparts from Labette Co. and the outcome was clear early on. Labette shot themselves in the foot, numerous times, to make any semblance of a competitive game impossible. The Grizzlies did display some nice passing plays but overall, never got anything to click on either side of the ball for very long. Down 59-6 at halftime, it would be a running clock from then on.
The Crusaders put "1" in the WIN COLUMN Friday night @ Labette County. A penalty-filled game, with flags flying like snow, especially in the first half. The Crusaders overcame and secured their first win of the season early in the 2nd half.

It was a mixed bag for the Crusaders Saturday evening at Sellers Park. First game of the season can be that way. There were moments of good execution but also moments of inability to capitalize and/or misfortune of one sort or another. The Spartans, now 2-0, scored in every quarter, sustaining momentum and securing the 35-13 win. They've scored in every quarter so far this season I believe, with a similar win over Mulvane Week 1.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Spring Postseason is Set
The 2020 WHS Varsity Football season came to an end Friday evening here at HOME vs historical rival Ark City, final score 27-6. Of course, due to Covid and Health Dept. restrictions, the 25% capacity crowd would have been much larger, but not for, those aforementioned conditions. Even with the fans absence, there's still a lot of "awesomeness" to be in the stadium or along the sideline. Just soaking in the atmosphere, and enjoying a challenging sport, played out by the hearts and souls of our community, our kids.
A close and competitive game at Sellers Monday evening between the Crusader JV and the Colt JV from Campus. Late game TD's by the latter sealed the deal for the visitors, final score CHS JV 28 WHS JV 22. Finding paydirt for WHS was Freshman Riley Nichols (twice) and Sophomore Caiden Hamilton (once).
Good game and effort Crusaders - the JV's final 2020 game will be next Monday @ Mulvane.
Down 13-7 after 3 qtrs, the "WELLINGTON" Crusaders lit it up in the 4th. "3" 1 yd rushing TD's by Sr. QB Berk Wright, complimented with 2 PAT's by brother Jack. Dustyn Schettler racked up 167 yds on 28 carries. The "O" and "D" Lines did their jobs as well. The "D" held Buhler scoreless from the 2:19 mark in the 2nd qtr. on. Berk also connected with Montel Tate in the 2nd qtr for a 23 yd score, PAT good. Cope Henry and Mekhi Haskin-Ybarra, 3 Interceptions/Fumble Recoveries between them.
Congratulations to the Wellington Crusader Varsity Football squad. The Irondukes hosted the Labette County Grizzlies Friday @ Sellers and downed the visitors 41-12 for the first Crusader win of the season! Labette County falls to 0-4.The Crusaders lead throughout, up 19-0 at halftime and extended that lead to 41-12 by games end.

The WHS JV Football Team hosted Collegiate Monday evening at Sellers Park. Final Score Collegiate 43 WHS 8
Take away the 2nd qtr in the Clearwater vs Wellington JV game at Clearwater and you would have had a tight game. The final was 28-0 Clearwater, 20 of those points came in the 2nd qtr.
A slow start by the Crusaders Friday evening at Sellers vs Clearwater, eventually turned into a very exciting contest with Crusader "METTLE" oozing all over the place.
Down 17-0 in the 2nd qtr, the boys in red would claw their way back behind Michael Cullens inspired runs, Berk Wright's 180 yds passing and 2 scores, Dustyn Schettler's skillful ball handling, and a score, Cope Henry and Montel Tate's combined receptions of over 100 yards, including a 47 yd Montel reception for 6.
Football CONDITIONING TESTS were completed Saturday. This has been the culmination to SUMMER PSQ for many years now, this is when you find out for sure, who is in shape and who isn't. It's also an opportunity to find out who attends regularly during the summer. Please take note of the last 3 pics in this post (see link below) - those student-athletes DID NOT MISS PRACTICE THIS SUMMER - their reward - they did not have to take part today in the conditioning test itself.
Summer PSQ continues, this morning (WEDNESDAY), the high school boys were outside running sprints, the high school girls were inside, doing gym work. Both groups were working hard!
What a beautiful morning for CONDITIONING! High School student-athletes are back at it, after a nearly 3 month hiatus due to COVID-19. The group eased back into it today at the HS Track, maintaining social distance the best they could. Each participants' TEMPERATURE was taken as they arrived at the Track, including my own! I was allowed to stay and glad! It is great to see these young men and women, out early on a Monday morning, and many were sportin' smiles! I think a vast majority were glad to see each other as well. WELCOME BACK CRUSADERS!
An early turnover by Wellington, lead to "6" for Buhler with only 39 secs. off the clock. Not the start you would want, but WHS buckled down, the defense played tough. So tough, 22:43 ticked off the clock before Buhler could find paydirt again. The Crusaders took the lead late in the 2nd qtr after Senior Zane Cornejo scrambled for 84 yds, leading to a 1 yd TD run by QB Zander Vargas and a "good" PAT by Karsten Gill. Gill went 10/11 on the season in PAT's - kudos to #40. Buhler would soon retake the lead and not relinquish.
The CRUSADERS ended regular season play in the 4A WEST DIV Friday evening, falling to the Mulvane Wildcats, 7-23. The boys in red started out strong but the Wildcats gained control of the action before halftime and won their 4th game of the year after starting out 0-4. Wellington will travel to (6-2) Buhler Week #9, Mulvane will host Independence who fell to Rose Hill 0-45.Those "2" winners will square off in Regional 4A action on Nov.
The CRUSADERS got their first 2019 taste of victory Friday night, on the road in Altamont (Labette County Grizzlies). Final score WHS 21 LCHS 00. The Crusaders 0-5 going in vs. the Grizzlies 3-2, played solid football, chalking up over 300 yds of offense, about 110% more than in most previous games this season and the first 100+ yd rusher for the Crusaders emerged as well. Kudos to Junior Trace Rusk who carried the ball 27 times for 123 yds and a TD!

The Crusaders fall to 0-2 on the road at Andale. The Indians came out of the starting blocks with a 67 yd opening kickoff return for 6. The deal was sealed early. Andale was up 21-0 after 1. Final score WHS 7 AHS 35. WHS Jr. QB Berkeley Wright saw his first varsity action, beginning the 2nd qtr, completing 7 passes for 38 yds. Wright and the Crusaders wouldn't find paydirt until late in the 4th Qtr on a short scamper by Sr. running back Zander Vargas.
The Crusaders hosted the Wichita Collegiate Spartans Friday evening at Sellers. Kudos to the fans of Wellington - the stadium was practically full, it was an awesome site. Unfortunately, the main event on the field didn't go as well as folks wearing red would have liked. Collegiate moved the ball effectively and stopped us from doing the same with any frequency. The 100th year of Crusader Football continues next Friday, on the road @ Andale, who downed Mulvane Friday 43-7.
The WHS Football team had their annual "Saturday" Scrimmage, a warm-up scrimmage if you will for next weeks' Crusader Club Hamburger Scrimmage at Sellers Park on Thursday, Aug. 29th beginning at 5:30PM. Lower temps and cloud cover made the morning scrimmage much more bearable than it would have been otherwise had the higher temps hung around. Here are some highlight pics from scrimmage action.
Sunday, the 2nd annual Football Coaches & Family Photo Shoot took place at Sellers. Coach Foley and his familly couldn't be there unfortunately. 13 kids, not all wanting their pics taken at the same time but all in all, they did great, the pics turned out cool enjoy!
It was conditioning tests Saturday morning at WHS for the football squad - a lot of them were in shape so things went well for them...a few know they'll have to push a little harder - a great group!! Only 20 days to the season opener here vs Collegiate. The Spartans will be strong and looking for vindication after their loss to us last year 32-0. It's going to be a battle - Sellers will be the place to be on Sept. 6th - 7PM!
The 2019 WMS Football Camp for incoming 7th & 8th graders got underway Wednesday out at WHS. A good sized group on hand along with coaches from both WHS and WMS. Also assisting Senior Irondukes Zander Vargas, Jake Soria, and Quentin Redford. The camp concluded on Thursday.
The WHS Football Seniors had a huge feast Thursday evening, at the home of Zach Barker, former Crusader football standout, and compliments of their coaches. The team has been in training since early June and High Intensity Training will kick in on Monday and run through Aug. 8th. (Boot Camp)
This Senior group is tight-knit and have been a solid group for a long time. They are excited and pumped about the upcoming season - heck, so am I!
Summer workouts continue out at WHS as part of the PSQ program. This conditioning phase runs through July 25th. Beginning July 29th and running thru August 8th, HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING kicks in.

As expected, Summer 2019 is moving right along, harvest is complete or near complete, and Driver’s Ed will wrap up soon as will many of the summer programs offered locally through the WRC and others. Some folks are taking vacations, the Kansas Wheat Festival rapidly approaches - just another great summer in progress, for the citizens of 67152.
WHS 2019 Football Camp wrapped up today with 7 on 7 action at Wichita South HS. Also participating, Kapaun HS. 7 on 7 is low intensity and they stress that throughout. It's more about form and function than diving catches or hard tackles, etc. It's a practice that gets everyone just a little closer to their opening season dates in early September.
WHS 2019 Football Camp is underway. Coaches and players alike were hard at it on Monday...there was "county-fair" action and more. Looked like 55 or 60 Freshmen thru Seniors on the field - helmets only for now. Temps were pleasant, it was early in the morning.
Camp continues all week, from 8AM - NOON @ WHS Practice Fields.
Summer Iron Duke Program (PSQ) continues and will run through July 25th. This involves a variety of athletes and age groups - great numbers this summer, there are many participating!
Football Camp is coming up next week as well. Camp will culminate with 7 on 7 action with Wichita South @ South. (They came here last summer)...time marches on, opening kickoff HERE vs Collegiate (Sep. 6th) is just 79 sunrises away. GO BIG RED!
The Summer Iron Duke Power Speed & Quickness program is underway at WHS…the pics we are sharing here were taken early Thursday morning out at the Home of the Crusaders…more sessions follow each day, including middle school age and elementary school age work out groups. The summer program runs through July 25th and involves weight training, form running, agility, plyometrics, aerobics, and flexibility training.
There are "16" WHS Crusader Track & Field athletes (and 3 alternates) with bigger smiles than usual on their faces as Graduation and the end of the 2018-2019 school year rapidly approaches. All "16" and "3" alternates (listed below), qualified for next Friday (May 24th) and Saturday's (May 25th) State Track 1A-6A Meet at Cessna Stadium @ WSU. Additionally, "6" of those "16" are 2019 REGIONAL 4A Champions!!
The WHS VARSITY TRACK & FIELD team were in action Friday at Andale HS at the AVCTL DIV IV Track & Field League Meet. Originally scheduled to take place at Rose Hill, the event venue was changed due to flooding in the Rose Hill area.
Wellington played host Friday to area track teams and fared very well on both the boys and girls side of things!

These are not official numbers but the first track meet at Clearwater HS each year is always unpredictable weather-wise. Spring hasn't quite taken hold and usually you prepare for the worse. There have been some unbelievably nice events weather-wise, but often, it has been like Friday or even worse. So, kudos to the athletes, coaches, fans, and WHS Yearbook students that braved the elements!
The remarkable 2018 Crusader Football season ended on Friday night at Sellers Park, the 4th game in a row at Sellers Park, against the Goddard Lions. Final score: Goddard 28 Wellington 14.
It was Crusaders vs Crusaders and it went down to the wire...the Wellington Crusaders emerged as Regional 4A Champions Friday evening at Sellers Park, playing host to the Buhler Crusaders, final score Buhler 7 Wellington 14. Our Irondukes move on, Buhler is done for the season.
The Crusaders downed Rose Hill Friday evening at Sellers Park, 38-13 in week #9 bracketed action. The boys in "Crusader Red" will advance and HOST Buhler Friday @ 7PM, who downed Winfield 25-0, ending the season for the Vikings at 3-6.
The 4A Brackets are out for playoff action (see link below) which will begin Friday. Turns out, the loss to Mulvane did nothing to alter the outcome for who we would play this coming Friday. The Crusaders went in as #2 seed, likely to face #15 seed Rose Hill week #9, and emerged as the #2 seed and will play Rose Hill this coming Friday HERE, despite the loss to the Wildcats who end up the #4 seed. This will perhaps catch the attention of a couple of Mulvane players who while exiting the field were letting the crowd know they were the #2 seed now.** Oops.
Week 7 brought another victory to the Wellington Crusader Varsity Football squad. The boys in red road tripped east to Viking Land and returned home a few hours later with a 22 -7 win. The Crusaders were up 14-0 at halftime and soon thereafter, up just by 7. However, a fumble in the red zone by Winfield resulted in a Wellington TD with 2:30 left in the game to go up by 15. Game over. Penalties hurt the Vikings, 95 yards worth...Crusaders ended game with just 20 yds, the fewest this season.
<courtesy sutv.com>
The IRONDUKES took their show on the road for the 3rd time this season and for the 3rd time, came HOME with a "W"! Now 4-1, the Crusaders downed (0-5) Rose Hill 38-7 in Friday night action at the Home of the Rockets.
For the 2nd time this season, the IRONDUKES were at HOME and the eventual outcome was good, but it took a while before Wellington could pull away from the visiting Orioles.
At halftime, WHS was up only 14-7. A strong 14 point 3rd qtr for the HOME team secured the cause, as its now 28-7. Augusta would score one more time in the 4th, so would Wellington. As the whistles blew, the game ended 35-14, the team in red could ring the bell!
IRONDUKES 47 CLEARWATER 26
The Crusaders got to taste the other end of an xx - 00 score this week, falling to the Andale Indians 28-00 at Sellers Park Friday evening. It was Youth Night, the stands were full of the Crusader faithful, and for the most part, the rains had ended. The field was quite saturated though and by games end, looked much like the tee area at a golf course driving range on 1/2 price day.
In an interview with Coach Aguilar, a few short weeks ago, he was upbeat and he even suggested what happened Friday night at Collegiate might very well happen. The Coaches are big on this group of Crusaders and Friday's results clearly shows why.
