The WHS Girls Tennis team has been hard at it all week, this first official week of FALL SPORT PRACTICES across the State. Coaches Brian Aufdengarten and Daphne Adams were putting the girls through their tennis rigors Thursday evening at the Crusader Courts on 9th St. They have a lot of fun at their sport and the coaches account for a lot of that. The numbers are down from last year but some very quality players returning for action this year nonetheless.
The IRONDUKES took to the practice field today in full pads and helmets and scrimmaged in front of a nice group of parents and fans for an hour or two...they demonstrated some fine play overall and the excitement of the upcoming season is starting to show. Going to have some experience on the line for sure and other significant weapons in the backfield and receiving. Defense made some good stops today, Offense moved the ball well. Just a scrimmage but the attitude is good.
WHS Lady Crusader SPORTS HISTORY was made Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2017 at the Wellington Golf Club. After "2" days of watching "rules videos", etc. the first ever Girls Golf Team took to the course for their first outside OFFICIAL PRACTICE in the history of the school. Coaches James Ginter and Vanessa Sawyer took charge of the team after a welcome to the Wellington Golf Club by our very own WHS Graduate and now Director of Golf at Wellington's phenomenal course, Mr. Derek Harrison.
The Crusader Football squad continues with their two-a-day practices throughout this week. Their focus is clear, the intensity is high. This is a good group and they encourage each other well. It's going to take that kind of a TEAM and the ooaches and players are working hard at that very thing. Opening night is Sept. 1st @ Clearwater... can't wait to see what this group can accomplish. There's some definite toughness there....and there's some PRIDE, on both sides of the fence. Let's get 'er done IRONDUKES!!
Had the pleasure of spending some time Tuesday morning with the Crusader Marching Band and their director Mr. Ben Olson out at Wellington High School. They are having BAND CAMP this week and I caught up with them on Crusader Circle (or whatever the road around the CRUSADER HOME is called) as they practiced their marching in preparation for the new school year which is knocking loudly now at everyone's door!
Fall Sports across the State of Kansas gets underway today, Monday, Aug. 14th! The WHS Volleyball and WHS Football squads got an early start on the day and the season, the former began @ 6:00AM, the latter 6:30AM. Both are holding 2-a-days all week so it won't be long until regular season action across the board gets underway. Also starting this morning at 8:00AM were the 6th-12th grade Cross Country athletes. Nearly 50 of them met behind WMS for 1st day stuff and then headed over towards 9th street for some running.
